The Hunter Exam is just the beginning. Beyond it lies Nen, ancient grudges, ruthless auctions, and an entire continent of monsters and stranger humans. Some chase the goal because their father walked the same path. Some chase it because of a promise made in blood. Some chase it because the chase itself is the point. Are you a sunny island kid, a silver-haired ex-assassin, a cold-eyed avenger, or a smiling predator? Take this 24-question quiz to find out.

About Hunter x Hunter
Yoshihiro Togashi's Hunter x Hunter began as a 1998 manga and has been adapted twice, but the 2011 Madhouse anime is the version most fans treat as canonical. It follows Gon Freecss, a twelve-year-old from Whale Island who leaves home to take the brutal Hunter Exam, partly to chase the father who abandoned him and mostly because the world is too interesting to stay put for. He picks up three friends along the way: Killua, an assassin heir trying to choose his own life; Kurapika, the last survivor of a slaughtered clan with a very specific revenge in mind; and Leorio, an aspiring doctor who wants to make medicine free for the poor. The Hunter Exam arc alone is one of the tightest opening stretches in shonen, and the show only gets stranger and sharper from there.
Hunter x Hunter is famous for two things: the Nen system, which is basically the most rigorously thought-out power framework in anime, and Togashi's willingness to break his own genre. The Chimera Ant arc is a war story that turns into a meditation on what makes something human. Greed Island is a video-game arc that's actually about economics and labor. Election arc is parliamentary procedure played as thriller. The manga has been on indefinite hiatus, returning briefly in 2022 and again in 2024, and Togashi's health updates are tracked by fans like weather reports. None of that has dimmed the fandom; if anything, the long wait has turned HxH into the show people rewatch and dissect rather than just consume.
Nen is the rare anime power system that doubles as a genuine personality framework. Your Nen type, Enhancer, Transmuter, Conjurer, Specialist, Manipulator, or Emitter, is determined by your temperament, and the six characters in this quiz cover that whole spread. Gon's pure-hearted forward momentum, Killua's quiet calculation, Kurapika's controlled obsession, Leorio's loud-hearted decency, Hisoka's hedonist menace, and Chrollo's curatorial detachment each map cleanly onto an archetype people actually recognize in their own friend groups. The result feels less like a label and more like a diagnosis you half-suspected already.
Meet the Characters
Each result in this quiz is anchored in a real character from Hunter x Hunter — here's a quick guide to who you might end up matched with.
Gon Freecss
The Sunny Hunter
Open-hearted, fearless, and dangerously single-minded. You meet the world with both hands out, you befriend almost everyone, and when something matters to you, nothing in the world is going to stop you. People underestimate how scary that focus actually is.
Killua Zoldyck
The Loyal Ex-Assassin
Sharp, witty, lethal, and quietly soft for the people you love. You grew up too fast and you're still figuring out who you are when nobody's giving you orders. The friend you'd actually die for is the one you barely tease anymore.
Kurapika
The Avenger With Rules
Disciplined, principled, and burning quietly underneath. You set yourself an impossible goal once and you've been organizing your entire life around it. You're the friend who keeps the receipts, the calendar, and the long memory.
Leorio Paradinight
The Big-Hearted Hustler
Loud, ambitious, and surprisingly tender. You talk about money because you grew up watching it ruin people, and you want to be the doctor that doesn't ask if a patient can pay. You're the reason the group keeps showing up.
Hisoka Morow
The Smiling Predator
Theatrical, intuitive, and pleasantly terrifying. You read people like a deck of cards, you respect strength, and you're easily bored. There's something a little wrong with you, but at least you're honest about it.
Chrollo Lucilfer
The Quiet Mastermind
Calm, cultured, and unsettlingly graceful. You're the strategist who reads philosophy between heists. You collect skills, ideas, and people the way other folks collect books. You'd rather understand the system than fight it.
How This Quiz Works
Every question presents you with options that explore different sides of the cast. As you answer, your match builds gradually toward the character you most resemble.
At the end, the character you most closely match becomes your result. The match percentage reflects how strongly your answers leaned toward that character versus the runners-up. A high match means your personality clearly fit one archetype; a closer call means you're a blend, which is just as common.
We don't ask for your email, sign-up, or any personal info to see your result. Take the quiz, get your character, share it if you want, and that's it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the manga still on hiatus?
Yes, with brief returns in 2022 and 2024. Togashi posts updates on social media when he can, but no one in the fandom plans their year around new chapters anymore. The 2011 anime covers everything through the Election arc, which is plenty of material for this quiz.
Do I need to have watched all 148 episodes?
No. The six characters in the quiz are all introduced and well-developed by the end of the Yorknew City arc, which is roughly the first sixty episodes. If you've made it past the Hunter Exam you'll recognize at least four of the six results.
Could I get Hisoka or Chrollo as a result?
You can. We didn't filter villains out, because half the appeal of HxH is that the antagonists have coherent worldviews you can genuinely identify with. If your answers lean toward thrill-seeking or detached intellectualism, the quiz will tell you so.
