What happens in the finale
The finale begins with almost ordinary happiness. Park Jin finally understands that Maidservant Kim has loved him through years of food, clothes, care, and waiting. Dang-gu and Cho-yeon are ready for their wedding. Jang Uk and Mu-deok order rings made from the yin-yang jade and talk like people who can leave the capital after the ceremony.
That softness matters because it gives Jin Mu something to ruin. Jang Uk no longer wants the ice stone as proof of greatness. After giving up his energy to make rain inside the barrier, he says the power is useless to him. What he wants is more modest and more frightening: enough control to stop Mu-deok if she ever runs wild, and enough freedom to take her to Sari Village so they can learn who the body’s original owner was.
Jin Mu moves first. He has Jin U-tak’s recovery to fear, because U-tak can expose the secret order. He also has the Crown Prince’s pride to use. Go Won knows the public praise after the ice stone incident was false, and he knows Jang Uk saved everyone while the court looked at the wrong star. Jin Mu presses exactly there, offering himself as the man who can help destroy the true King’s Star.
Then the bells begin. Mu-deok hears what Jang Uk cannot. Jin Mu has the Soul Ejector, the divination curse, and the Queen’s bells, and he uses them to reach Naksu’s soul inside Mu-deok’s body. She freezes in the market, then receives the command clearly at Sejukwon: kill Jin U-tak.
The timing is vicious. Cho-yeon and Dang-gu arrive in wedding clothes to greet her father before the ceremony. Mu-deok appears with Naksu’s sword and kills him. Cho-yeon loses her father in the room where she came for a blessing, and Dang-gu is left standing between the woman he loves and the friend he cannot understand anymore.
Jin Mu makes the private murder public evidence. He announces that Mu-deok is Naksu, claims she hid inside Songrim to avenge Cho Chung, and asks for Songrim to be punished. Seo Yul admits he knew the truth and wants to investigate what happened, but Park Jin confines him. Jin Ho-gyeong wants Mu-deok’s body alive because she suspects that body may be Bu-yeon. Cho-yeon wants the assassin dead. Everyone is grieving from a different fact.
Jang Uk reaches Mu-deok after the command has already done its damage. She comes back to herself long enough to see the bodies, remember the rings, and remember his old promise. If she ever drew her sword again, he told her to point it at him first. She stabs him, and he accepts the wound as the responsibility he promised to carry.
After his death, even mourning is taken from the people who love him. Songrim cannot protect his name. Maidservant Kim cannot dress him properly. His body is burned as the body of a criminal tied to Naksu. Mu-deok wakes with the bells gone and walks toward the soul shifters’ grave, while Jang Uk’s pyre erupts behind her.
He rises through the fire beneath the King’s Star.
Does Jang Uk die in the Alchemy of Souls ending?
Yes, Jang Uk dies after Mu-deok stabs him. The death is real enough for Songrim to hold a pyre and for the people who love him to believe they have lost him. The finale does not play the stabbing as a trick wound or a misunderstanding that can be talked away.
His return comes from the power tied to the ice stone and the King’s Star. Earlier, Jang Uk gave up his own energy to turn the ice stone barrier into rain, and the stone became useless to him because he no longer wanted power for himself. That change matters. By the finale, he carries the power of the skies without treating it like a prize.
The line over the pyre says, “This is not your end yet.” That is the answer. Jang Uk dies as the young master Daeho tried to contain, then returns as the King’s Star everyone had been misreading, hiding, or fearing.
Why does Mu-deok stab Jang Uk?
Mu-deok stabs Jang Uk because Jin Mu has forced Naksu’s soul to run wild through the cursed divination bells. She is not making a free choice when she kills Jin U-tak. She is being used as the weapon Jin Mu always wanted Naksu to remain.
But the stabbing of Jang Uk also carries their promise. In Episode 18, when Mu-deok had Naksu’s sword again and the ice stone tempted her with power, Jang Uk told her to point the blade at him first. If she chose to become Naksu again and unleash that danger, he would take responsibility for setting her loose and die.
That promise makes the stabbing more painful than a simple betrayal. Mu-deok briefly returns to herself, sees what has happened, and remembers him. Jang Uk does not fight her like an enemy. He receives the wound as the cost of loving someone Daeho had already decided was a monster.
What happens to Mu-deok, Naksu, and Bu-yeon?
The finale leaves Mu-deok alive, but not free. After the bells stop, she wakes alone and says she can no longer hear them. That means Jin Mu’s immediate control has ended, but the damage remains: Naksu has killed Jin U-tak, stabbed Jang Uk, and been exposed to Daeho as the assassin inside Mu-deok’s body.
Bu-yeon is the unanswered part of the body. Master Lee had already told Jang Uk that Mu-deok has not run wild because the original owner had great divine power. Jang Uk planned to go to Sari Village with her to learn who that girl was. Jin Ho-gyeong’s reaction after the stabbing points the same way: she wants the body brought back alive because she suspects it may belong to her lost daughter.
So the ending leaves three names in one crisis. Mu-deok is the life Naksu has been living. Naksu is the soul Jin Mu can still command. Bu-yeon is the body with divine power that may have been containing the disaster all along. The finale refuses to separate them neatly before Part 2.

The ending takes the season’s central bargain and makes it impossible to ignore. Jang Uk and Naksu began as two people using each other: a blocked young master who needed a teacher, and an assassin trapped in a weak body who needed a way back to power. By the finale, both have given up the thing they thought they wanted. He no longer wants power as status. She no longer wants freedom if it means treating him as disposable.
That is why Jin Mu’s attack hurts. He does not defeat them by proving their love was fake. He defeats them by dragging Naksu back into the role she had almost escaped. She becomes a blade again, and the world immediately recognizes only the blade.
Jang Uk’s resurrection answers a different secret. Daeho spent the season trying to decide what his birth meant before he could define himself. The pyre removes the ambiguity. He is the King’s Star, and that power has arrived through death, grief, and public disgrace rather than triumph. He comes back changed because the life he wanted to protect has already been shattered.
