Jang Uk finally gets the opened gate he wanted, but every gift in Daeho arrives with a debt attached.
In Episode 03, Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) survives the poison, protects Mu-deok (Jung So-min) from taking the blame alone, and walks out of Sejukwon with the one thing he has wanted all his life: an open gate of energy. Mu-deok accepts him as her pupil after he kneels and promises to serve her, but she makes the deal temporary, ending the moment he helps her regain Naksu’s power. Heo Yeom’s treatment leaves a torrent of energy inside Uk, Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) becomes the key to controlling it, and Park Jin (Yoo Jun-sang) shuts Songrim’s door in Uk’s face just as the Crown Prince is pulled toward him.
Jang Gang blocks Jang Uk’s gate to keep him alive
The opening goes back to the wound under Jang Uk’s entire life. Jang Gang leaves his infant son behind after ordering that no one open the child’s gate of energy, while another man presses him on Do-hwa, the child’s parentage, and the rumors already waiting to swallow them. Jang Gang’s answer is colder than a denial: if Uk lives as his son with the gate blocked, he has a chance to survive.
That condition explains why Park Jin has treated Uk’s hunger for magic like a threat instead of a boy’s ambition. The blocked gate was never only punishment. It was a lid placed over a dangerous identity, and the flashback makes clear that even the people protecting Uk have been protecting him by trapping him.
So when Uk wakes after the poison and says Mu-deok did not poison him, the confession lands as the first real act of ownership he has been allowed. He admits he drank the poison himself because he could not bear a body unable to cast magic. Then he refuses to leave without Mu-deok, even while barely standing, because she risked her life following his order.
It is reckless. It is also the first time Uk has defended the person who defended his future.
Mu-deok accepts Jang Uk as her pupil in secret
Sejukwon gives the partnership its proper shape. Uk finds Mu-deok battered, fainting, and furious at the weakness of the body she now lives in. She jokes that Songrim is too nice if this is torture, but the joke has teeth: she took the pain because a believable poisoning was the only way to force the elders to open Uk’s gate.
Uk understands what that cost. When he tells her that people have ignored his desperation all his life, the line strips away his usual teasing. He is a noble young master, but this part of him has been lonely for years: asking for teachers, getting dismissed, trying to become someone while everyone around him insists survival requires staying small.
Then he kneels.
“I, Jang Uk, promise to serve and protect my master, Mu-deok, with my life.”
Mu-deok accepts, but she does not let tenderness rewrite the contract. In public, she remains his servant. In private, she is his master. Their bond lasts only until Uk becomes strong enough to help her regain her energy and become Naksu again; after that, master and pupil part ways.
Jang Uk agrees, but the sadness is already tucked inside the bargain. He has finally found someone who sees his desperation as usable instead of embarrassing. Mu-deok has finally found a body and a pupil that might return her to power. Neither of them can admit yet that the exit clause hurts because the partnership has already become personal.
Heo Yeom’s energy turns recovery into a dangerous shortcut
At Sejukwon, fantasy rules and comedy sit at the same table. Heo Yeom opens Uk’s gate, gives him extra energy to speed his recovery, then complains about the cost while Park Jin warns that the energy must be taken back. The detail matters: Uk is not suddenly powerful because destiny smiled at him. He has borrowed power inside a body that does not know how to use it.
Mu-deok discovers the truth when she checks Uk’s core and feels Heo Yeom’s torrent of energy. The problem is immediate. If Uk cannot control it, Heo Yeom can retrieve it whenever he wants. If Uk uses the wrong breathing technique, Mu-deok says he could lose control, go mad, bleed from every orifice, and die.
She says it like a training note.
That is the pleasure of their dynamic here. Uk is thrilled to feel cold water without collapsing, to stand in his own body and know the gate is open. Mu-deok explains Jipsu, Ryusu, and Chisu, then undercuts her own legend by getting cramps in Mu-deok’s short, weak legs. She is still Naksu inside; she is also a servant girl whose body cannot sprint through the cold without making her curse.
Uk is not much better. He boasts that if Jang Gang mastered Jipsu in one year, he can do it in three months. Mu-deok tests him with a broom and a stick, and he proves he has almost no swordsmanship, no hand-to-hand skill, and a deep talent for talking before learning. The joke works because his frustration is real. He knows the theory. He knows the names. He knows enough to recognize Tansu. But knowledge without practice leaves him flat on the ground.
The breathing-technique plan brings Seo Yul into the triangle without turning him into a simple rival. Because Heo Yeom is from the Seo family, Yul should share a similar breathing rhythm. Mu-deok needs seven breaths with her hand near his core. Uk hears that she could touch him easily but hesitates with Yul, and his jealousy arrives before he knows what to call it.
Seo Yul recognizes Mu-deok before Jang Uk is cast out
Mu-deok’s attempt to steal Yul’s technique starts as farce and ends with a crack in her disguise. She follows him, lies about learning dance at the brothel, tails him into the bathhouse, and finally blurts that she is in love with him when he asks what she wants. Yul does not believe the lie for long. He sees martial arts in her movement and understands that she is trying to get his breathing technique for Uk.
The scene turns when Mu-deok takes the bird whistle he carries for an old friend. Yul says the friend who owned it died. Mu-deok, who knows exactly what the object means, bargains with it anyway and gets three breaths in return. When she later says, “So, I guess you do remember me then, Seo Yul,” the past between Yul and Naksu becomes impossible to treat as dead.
Uk and Mu-deok turn the stolen lesson into progress. Uk matches his breathing to the technique, feels the energy move, and immediately shifts back into teasing jealousy. He warns that only he can get close enough to see the blue mark in her eyes. Mu-deok agrees too easily, then says she will try not to fall for Seo Yul because he is handsome.
It is funny because Uk is not subtle. It matters because Mu-deok’s eye mark is a real danger, not a flirtation prop. Their closeness protects her secret as much as it feeds his insecurity.
Outside their room, Daeho keeps tightening around Uk. Jin Mu tells the Crown Prince (Shin Seung-ho) that Uk claimed Naksu’s sword and now has his gate open. The prince hears the insult before he even meets Uk properly: the son of Jang Gang, already connected to a forbidden sword, suddenly able to train.
Park Jin makes the harsher move first. He summons Uk, lets him apologize, then forbids him from entering Songrim as a mage. Uk must surrender his Spirit Plaque, but he says he lost it. The punishment is a hundred floggings.
Uk takes ninety-nine.
Then he asks Park Jin to deliver the last blow himself. Park Jin tells him to stand down, give up, and stop trying to be anything more if he wants to survive. Uk refuses that old sentence. He asks Mu-deok to get the sword, walks out under everyone’s eyes, and lands directly in the Crown Prince’s path.
The duel challenge is not a fair fight. Uk knows that. He says he would have to be full of it to believe he can compete right now, then corrects himself through Mu-deok’s language: someone calls that spirit, so he will try.
That is the whole episode in one turn. Uk has no business surviving half the doors he opens. He opens them anyway.
What works
- The master-pupil vow gives Uk and Mu-deok a clean emotional center without softening either one too fast. He kneels because she risked her life; she accepts because he is useful; both truths fit.
- The magic rules are specific enough to make danger readable. Jipsu, Ryusu, Chisu, breathing rhythm, torrent energy, and the risk of madness all turn Uk’s shortcut into a problem instead of a cheat code.
- Mu-deok’s weak-body comedy lands because it keeps Naksu’s pride intact. She can describe herself as the Shadow Assassin one minute and get humbled by cold legs the next.
- Seo Yul’s bird whistle scene gives the triangle history instead of empty jealousy. He does not know the whole truth, but he recognizes enough to make Mu-deok dangerous around him.
- Park Jin’s rejection hurts because it comes from fear, not cruelty alone. He is wrong to crush Uk publicly, but the flashback explains why he believes restraint is protection.
What stumbles
- The wine and acorn-jelly comedy around Park Jin, Heo Yeom, Maidservant Kim, and Do-hwa runs a little long before Uk’s training resumes. The emotional information is useful, but the rhythm sags in the middle of the banter.
- Jin Cho-yeon’s scene with her mother adds Jinyowon pressure and the missing Bu-yeon thread, yet it feels more like setup than drama here. The family wound is important, but the scene does not bite as hard as Uk, Mu-deok, or Yul’s material.
- The Crown Prince arrives late enough that his challenge feels like a hard turn, even though Jin Mu prepares it. The politics are clear; the personal charge between prince and Uk still needs the next episode to carry it.
What this sets up for Episode 04
Uk now has an opened gate, stolen breathing knowledge, Heo Yeom’s torrent of energy, and a duel he cannot realistically win. Mu-deok has to keep training him while hiding the blue mark, Seo Yul has fresh reason to question who she is, and Park Jin has made Uk’s desire for Songrim impossible to resolve quietly. Next comes the question of whether Uk’s spirit can survive contact with the Crown Prince’s skill.
