Alchemy of Souls Episode 10 Recap: Jang Uk Reads Mu-deok's Love Letter

Jang Uk and Mu-deok stop pretending distance is discipline, even while Songrim, Cheonbugwan, and old love letters tighten around them.
In Alchemy of Souls Episode 10, Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) is accepted into Songrim, only to learn that Park Jin has made admission a cage. Mu-deok/Naksu (Jung So-min) tries to reach him by entering Songrim’s servant contest, while Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) keeps circling the girl who knows too much about Danhyanggok. By the closing scene, Jang Uk’s invisible book and Mu-deok’s desperate exam mirror each other: one reads a hidden love letter, the other delivers one without meaning to.
Park Jin gives Jang Uk a blank book he cannot read
At the Jang household, Maidservant Kim cleans Jang Uk’s room as if his life has finally moved forward. She tells the servants that this time will be different, that Jang Uk has changed, and that the room may soon belong to a married couple. Her guess about the “bird’s egg” is wrong in the practical sense, but emotionally close enough to sting Mu-deok.
Mu-deok’s private answer is colder. What she and Jang Uk shared was survival, desire, and a promise to part once they each got what they wanted. If affection is sitting somewhere between them, she calls it a shell that can be discarded once the egg hatches. That is Naksu speaking like an assassin again, but the fact that she has to explain it to herself says plenty.
Inside Songrim, Jang Uk tries to beat the rules the way he always has. He memorizes the basic text because he has already read the same books through 12 failed masters. Park Jin (Yoo Jun-sang) sees through the trick and hands him Words of the Heart, a book that looks blank unless the reader can focus energy deeply enough to see the writing. Jang Uk thought admission meant movement. Park Jin has made stillness the punishment.
Park Jin’s larger plan is not hidden from Master Heo.
Park Jin is not hiding his real motive from Master Heo. He has no intention of training Jang Uk properly. He wants him under watch, unable to wander, and useful as bait. If the news of Jang Uk’s opened energy gate reaches Jang Gang, then the missing Gwanju may finally return.
That gives Jang Uk’s training a rough edge. Park Jin is not only being strict. He is using the son to summon the father, because he believes Jang Gang is needed to deal with Jin Mu. The political shape of the story stays visible even when Jang Uk is sulking over a blank page.
Jin Mu’s side keeps moving too. He and the Queen discuss the Crown Prince Go Won (Shin Seung-ho) becoming less hostile to Songrim after the duel. Jin Mu is not worried. He still has Jang Uk’s constellation plate and believes the Crown Prince will eventually have no choice but to kill him. By the time Jin Mu produces the item meant to subdue Jin Ho-gyeong and bring Jinyowon closer, Jang Uk’s personal progress has become a court problem with a weapon attached.
Seo Yul follows an umbrella back toward Danhyanggok
Seo Yul visits the Jang household looking for Mu-deok, pretending the matter is only the umbrella he once lent her. It is a transparent excuse, but a useful one. He takes her to buy a replacement, rejects the cheap match, and chooses an expensive umbrella because the first one was sheepskin and bamboo.
Then the conversation slips. Yul mentions his leg injury from Danhyanggok. Mu-deok knows he broke it, then covers herself by saying Park Dang-gu told her. Yul remembers the girl who waited for him there, saved him, and treated his wound before they parted. Mu-deok pays for the umbrella with Jang money and escapes the emotional bill as quickly as she can.
The lookalike trouble arrives almost immediately through So-i. Women in the market chase her for stealing a purse and ring, and Yul sees enough to think she might be Mu-deok. Then he notices the problem: this girl can see. So-i is cornered by thugs from Sari Village, pretends to be blind again, and gets rescued by Yul after crying that strangers are trying to kidnap her.
It is a clever complication because it threatens Mu-deok’s secret from the side. It also gives Yul a second blind girl connected to Sari Village, theft, and false helplessness. He offers to take So-i to the authorities, but she refuses. He leaves her with the umbrella instead, and she immediately wonders if she should have accepted help. That small regret makes So-i dangerous in a different way: she is a trickster who badly needs a way out.
Mu-deok fights her way into Songrim
Jang Uk breaks out of Songrim long enough to take a bath, eat honey biscuits, and look for Mu-deok. He misses her at home because she has gone to register for Songrim’s servant hiring contest. The visual joke is sharp: the young master sneaks out because he cannot stand separation, while the servant tries to earn her way inside because he cannot survive Songrim alone.
Their near-miss outside the wall is the romantic center before either of them calls it that. Jang Uk looks down, sees Mu-deok, and tells her he is glad because he thought he would not see her. Mu-deok tells him to stay focused on what he must do inside. She will do everything she can outside. Then she gives him the line that becomes her hidden letter: “Just wait there. I’ll be there soon, too.”
That promise gives the servant contest the charge of a love scene with laundry, arithmetic, and water buckets. Mu-deok wants an official way into Songrim, and Maidservant Kim tries to arrange a shortcut through Maidservant Park. Park Jin rejects the bribe, humiliates Maidservant Kim by treating the scarf as corruption, and somehow also manages to wound his own tender little not-courtship with her.
The comedy keeps multiplying. Heo Yun-ok covers for Jang Uk by pretending to spend four private hours with him in his room. Park Dang-gu and Jin Cho-yeon try to stage a fake breakup, then delay it because Cho-yeon wants to see a magic show first and Dang-gu wants to marry for love. The Crown Prince catches Jang Uk with a hidden honey biscuit, takes the snack, and still warns him away from patrols.
The written test lets the whole young cast become foolish for Mu-deok. Park Dang-gu and Yul solve questions from a copied test sheet. The Crown Prince, drawn in by news that “Filthy Mu-deok” is taking the exam, ends up helping deliver answers under the cover of royal attention. Eunuch Oh supplies the rice-paste answer for ink-stained clothes. Everyone is cheating, and somehow everyone looks proud.
That could have made Mu-deok’s win feel too easy, so the practical test matters. She passes ingredient preparation, cleaning, and laundry on her own. The final task sends the applicants five ri to bring back water, and only the first five will be hired. At that point, the helper network falls away.
Mu-deok is not the fastest body in the field. She is a warrior soul trapped in a weaker servant body, and the gap hurts. As she falls behind, she remembers her own brutal lesson to Jang Uk: if he is not willing to do anything, he might as well die. She turns that cruelty back on herself. No matter how pathetic she feels, she must do what she can now.
So she runs. She drops, rises, and crosses as number 125. The exam that began with cheating ends with Mu-deok forcing her current body past humiliation until it obeys long enough to finish. That is why the pass matters.
The hidden poem tells Jang Uk how to answer Mu-deok
While Mu-deok is fighting for fifth place, Jang Uk is staring down Words of the Heart. Master Lee tells him the secret: the book is a love letter written by Master Seo Gyeong for a woman who could not see, so she could read it with her heart. The woman was Jin Seol-ran, the first leader of Jinyowon.
Jang Uk solves it not through discipline alone but through feeling the shape of the letter. A love letter begins with the recipient’s name. Once he has Jin Seol-ran, the words appear. The poem itself is full of elements that cannot be grasped directly: water in soil, fire in trees, wind on rock, blue light, white breath, snow, tears. It ends with the confession, “I am a fool who dares not shed a single tear.”
The crosscut works because Jang Uk is reading a letter that was never delivered while Mu-deok is delivering one by exhausting herself for him. He finishes the poem at the same moment she finishes the race. Park Jin sees the copied words and knows Jang Uk has read the book. Jang Uk runs to Sejukwon because Mu-deok has collapsed.
The final scene gives Jang Uk and Mu-deok their answer. Jang Uk tells Mu-deok the book was a love letter that never reached its recipient, and she calls Seo Gyeong a coward for writing feelings he never delivered. Jang Uk hands her the recruitment notice back like a reply. A letter, he says, only has to reveal the heart.
Mu-deok tries to file her exam under loyalty. Jang Uk refuses the smaller meaning. He says he read, in her action, “This is how far I will go just to be able to see you.” Then he gives the response she was not prepared to receive: “I missed you, too. A lot.”
Mu-deok can name the danger exactly. She should have braced herself before letting someone get this close. Her voice-over calls what she gave him a foolish and pitiful love letter, one that should never have been read or delivered. The tragedy is that Jang Uk has already read it perfectly.
What works
- The servant exam gives Mu-deok’s weakened body a real task. The written-test cheating is funny, but the water run restores the cost of her choice.
- Jang Uk reading Words of the Heart as a love letter fits his strengths. He is not the most trained mage in Songrim, but he listens for the emotional key others ignore.
- The Crown Prince’s honey-biscuit alliance with Jang Uk and Mu-deok keeps paying off. His irritation is still royal, but his help is real.
- Seo Yul’s umbrella scenes add unease without rushing the reveal. He knows too much, Mu-deok slips too easily, and So-i gives him a second puzzle to misread.
- The closing exchange lands because neither Jang Uk nor Mu-deok uses a grand confession. He answers what she did. She realizes he understood.
What stumbles
- The So-i thread arrives in a crowded stretch and asks for a lot of attention before her Sari Village connection has clear weight.
- The written-test cheating is funny, but it briefly makes Mu-deok feel less capable than the practical section later proves she is.
- Dang-gu and Cho-yeon’s postponed breakup is sweet, though it runs a little long while the central Jang Uk/Mu-deok and Jin Mu threads are both tightening.
What this sets up for Episode 11
Mu-deok has a path into Songrim now, which means Jang Uk’s training can no longer be separated from her presence. Park Jin has also realized that the servant beside Jang Uk is not incidental, while Seo Yul now has So-i, Danhyanggok, and Mu-deok’s too-specific knowledge sitting in the same corner of his mind. Jin Mu still has Jang Uk’s constellation plate, and the Crown Prince’s growing softness toward Jang Uk may soon be tested by someone who knows exactly where to press.
