Alchemy of Souls Episode 09 Recap: Mu-deok Is Locked Outside Songrim

Jang Uk gets the robe he wanted, but Songrim’s rules immediately turn victory into separation from Mu-deok.
Jang Uk enters Jeongjingak as a mage of Songrim, receives his Spirit Plaque, and gets the welcome party everyone around him thought might never happen. The cost arrives almost as quickly: Mu-deok cannot follow him through Songrim’s gate anymore, and Jang Uk has to choose between asking for a special exception and keeping her soul-shifter secret safe. Around that separation, Seo Yul gets closer to the truth about Naksu, Jin Mu begins a fake Bu-yeon scheme, and the Crown Prince turns his public defeat into a tense cup of congratulations.
Jang Uk receives his Jeongjingak robe and Spirit Plaque
Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) starts the hour with the public recognition he has chased since the beginning. He is given the Jeongjingak uniform, the Spirit Plaque that allows access through Songrim, and the Book of Regulations that will now govern his life. Park Jin names him “first son of the Jang family” and a mage of Jeongjingak, which is both an honor and a trap.
The welcome ceremony lands because Jang Uk does not act like a triumphant prodigy. When he finds Mu-deok (Jung So-min) afterward, he wants her verdict on the robe. She tries to play plain servant, then finally admits it looks better on her pupil than it did on Yul or Dang-gu.
He hugs her too hard.
For a boy who has survived poison, exile, humiliation, and a duel with the Crown Prince, the line that matters is simple: “Master. Thanks so much.” Mu-deok has pushed him like a weapon and protected him like a secret. Now she has to watch him step into the institution that kept him out for twenty years.
That victory does not stay private for long. Heo Yeom gets drunk and mourns Jang Uk’s mother, Do-hwa, while blaming Park Jin for never confessing his feelings. It is funny because the men are old enough to know better. It also matters because the advice is blunt: if you do not say what you feel, the other person may look somewhere else.
Mu-deok and Jang Uk are not ready to say those words.
Everyone around them keeps saying them by accident.
Seo Yul follows Mu-deok while Jin Mu hunts for Bu-yeon
The party gives Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) his own quiet turn. He catches sight of the blind girl from Sari Village, the one looking for Mu-deok, and recognizes that something about her story points toward Naksu. The girl has stolen from people in the capital and carries herself with enough nerve to claim she is from a famous mage family, but the name she is hunting is the dangerous part: Mu-deok.
Yul already knows too much, and this hour lets him feel the weight of that knowledge. When Mu-deok finds him sitting apart from the party, he says he is drunk even though he does not look it. He says he loses direction when he is upset. Then he admits the thing he should not admit: he has stepped off the right path, and he is holding her hand.
Mu-deok answers in the language she trusts. She does not give him romance. She gives him a tactic. When thoughts scatter, focus on one thing. For now, focus on her and follow.
That would be gentle if he did not know she is Naksu.
It becomes painful because he does.
Their walk also pays off the earlier illusion. Mu-deok asks what her illusion said to him, and he tells her it said it loved him. She fumbles because Naksu used to say that easily. The old habit slips into the new body, and Yul hears the ghost of the girl he lost under the voice of the servant standing beside him.
While Yul struggles with memory, Jin Mu sharpens his next move. He connects Jang Uk’s birth under the King’s Star to Jang Gang, the ice stone, and the fear that Songrim may now be sheltering a catastrophe. More importantly, he reveals how he plans to control Jin Ho-gyeong: if the real Bu-yeon is dead, he will make a fake daughter convincing enough for a grieving mother to believe.
The Jin family scenes are brief, but they change the stakes around Jinyowon. A false candidate fails the Jinyowon door test. Ho-gyeong remembers Bu-yeon as a blind child who could sense the energy in all things, even a dead bird before anyone else noticed. Her grief is not abstract. It is a mother still holding the shape of a child who saw the world through energy.
That is why Jin Mu’s plan feels cruel before it even begins.
The Crown Prince congratulates Jang Uk with a poisoned smile
The Crown Prince (Shin Seung-ho) makes his entrance at Chwiseonru spoiled, wounded, theatrical, and not stupid. He knows everyone expects anger after losing to Jang Uk. Instead, he brings a jar of alcohol and pours the new mage a drink in front of the room.
He says he is happy, as Crown Prince, to have a great mage in Daeho. Jang Uk accepts the cup, then returns the gesture and tells him to become a great king. On the surface, it is civility. Underneath, both men know the duel is still sitting between them.
Park Jin watches the exchange and sees the shape no one can say aloud in public: the heir to the throne facing the boy born under the King’s Star. The political tension is not separate from the romance plot. Every step Jang Uk takes toward power makes Mu-deok harder to protect, and every public show of restraint from the Crown Prince makes his private resentment more interesting.
That resentment comes out with Mu-deok. He counts down, expecting her to chase after him, and she does. Their insults have settled into a strange rhythm now. She calls herself Filthy Mu-deok with royal flattery polished until it squeaks. He admits he hates Jang Uk so much it makes him sick, then says he hates seeing her root for him too.
The warning is real. If she interferes in another fight between him and Jang Uk, he says he will kill her first.
Then she asks if his injury is healing.
That is the Crown Prince’s problem with Mu-deok in one breath. She knows exactly how to flatter his vanity, but she also notices the wound. He pulls out the sachet she gave him and insists he would never hang something so precious by the outhouse. He wants her loyalty to be ridiculous. He also wants it to be real.
This triangle remains funny because everyone involved is sincere at exactly the wrong time.
Songrim’s gate separates Mu-deok from Jang Uk
The decisive turn comes after the party, when Jang Uk is too drunk to stand and Mu-deok tries to follow him back into Songrim. The guard refuses her at the gate. Before now, she could enter because Jang Uk was a guest. Now he belongs to Songrim, and she does not.
The rule cuts cleanly. Jang Uk cannot leave during basic training. Mu-deok cannot enter. The master and pupil who survived because they stayed attached to each other are now separated by an ordinary regulation.
Mu-deok begging outside the gate hurts because both halves of her identity are visible. She is Naksu, the assassin who once frightened Daeho. She is also a servant girl asking the young masters to take her in because her drunk pupil needs care. Seo Yul finally sends her home by saying the one thing she cannot fight: if she stays, Jang Uk will break the rules, and all his work will be wasted.
Inside, Jang Uk wakes under the care of Heo Yun-ok, the young woman he helped during the soul-shifter attack. Their scenes are light on the surface: Sun-i scolds him, Yun-ok keeps his secret, and Jang Uk jokes his way through Master Heo’s exaggerated praise. But the first name out of his mouth is Mu-deok’s. He reaches for water and expects her there.
When he learns she cannot enter, he goes to Park Jin. Park Jin refuses the exception and asks the question that matters: does Jang Uk need the servant because she connects him to the master who taught him Tansu? Jang Uk understands the danger immediately. If he pushes too hard, Park Jin may look more closely at Mu-deok.
So he lies in the direction that will hurt if it ever reaches her. He calls her a mere servant and says he cannot risk his place for her.
Mu-deok does not hear that sentence, but she feels the distance it creates. She tries to buy a Spirit Plaque on the black market, then considers the Songrim servant recruitment contest. Maidservant Kim, trying to comfort everyone at once, makes it worse by telling her Jang Uk wants her to enjoy flowers and good food without him.
Then Kim repeats the bird’s egg story.
Jang Uk once described the woman he cares for as a bird’s egg at the top of a tall tree, someone who has only him. Mu-deok realizes the woman is her. The recognition does not make her secure. It makes her remember the contract she wrote for herself: when she gets her energy back and becomes Naksu again, master and pupil will end.
Jang Uk sits inside Songrim and says he misses Mu-deok.
Mu-deok stands outside his new life and realizes missing him may be the least useful thing she has ever done.
What works
- At the gate, nobody betrays Mu-deok. Nobody drags her away. A rule that sounded ceremonial at the opening suddenly decides where she can stand.
- Seo Yul’s hand-holding scene is quiet but loaded. His confession that he has stepped off the right path says more than a speech would, especially because Mu-deok responds by turning intimacy into navigation.
- The Crown Prince and Mu-deok remain a reliable comic pairing. Their outhouse-sachet argument should be silly, and it is, but his threat and her concern keep changing the temperature.
- The Bu-yeon material finally gives Jinyowon’s grief a sharper edge. The dead bird memory explains why Ho-gyeong is vulnerable to Jin Mu without making her look foolish.
What stumbles
- The middle has a lot of table-setting to carry. Heo Yun-ok’s arrival, the fake Bu-yeon plan, the blind girl’s search, Master Lee’s brush with Maidservant Kim, and Songrim’s new rules all matter, but the stretch occasionally feels crowded.
- Heo Yeom’s drunken grief works as character business, yet the scene runs long before it returns to Jang Uk and Mu-deok. The comedy is pleasant; the emotional point arrives earlier than the scene ends.
- The blind girl’s thefts are useful for plot, but her personality is still broad at this stage. For now, she moves through the hour as a clue more than as a full person, and that shows.
What this sets up for Episode 10
Mu-deok now has to find a legal way into Songrim or accept that Jang Uk can train without her, and neither option fits the bond they have built. Jang Uk has chosen caution around Park Jin, but that means letting Mu-deok misunderstand his silence. Jin Mu’s fake Bu-yeon plan also puts Jinyowon, the ice stone, and Mu-deok’s original identity closer to the same collision point.
