Cai Zhao enters Li Sect territory with hunger, jokes, and enough mercy to notice the people trapped there.
This is a road chapter with teeth. Mu Qingyan chooses usefulness over execution, while Cai Zhao and Song Yuzhi lie their way out of Qingque Sect and pass through market comedy, poison, nightmare, and village fear. By the time Cai Zhao reaches Peace and Plenty, the “demon sect” means wages, missing servants, forced labor, and children waiting for Xue Youfu to come home with sweets.
Mu Qingyan spares the Qinglong Altar master
Mu Qingyan (Zhou Yiran) begins with a man expecting death. The Qinglong Altar master admits that Xing had nothing to do with the betrayal. He calls himself despicable, but he will not let the blame touch the girl who once saved him with a bowl of rice. His request is small and desperate: save Xing.
Qingyan recites the man’s history instead of killing him. Sold into Li Sect at seven. Adopted by Elder Qiu. Trusted by Nie Zhe for handling affairs well. Later rejected because he helped the altar avoid taxes and delay corvee labor when he could. Qingyan is not forgiving him because he is harmless. He is keeping him because even in a corrupt place, the man still drew a line around the people beneath him.
“To judge a person,” Qingyan says, “you should not look at how good they are in good times, but how bad they can be in bad times.” It is a clean way to frame Qingyan’s politics this week. He is not looking for pure hands. He is looking for restraint under pressure.
That choice runs against Li Sect’s internal panic. Elder Hu accuses Shangguan Haonan of helping masked men stop the assassination attempt on Qingyan. Shangguan denies it, the Chief gives him an alibi, and Elder Hu is forced to retreat in public. In private, the plan hardens: send Shangguan toward Xuanwu Altar, have Xiong Qianjin watch him, and blame Qingyan if blood follows.
Li Sect is eating itself before Qingyan even reaches the palace.
Cai Zhao and Song Yuzhi disguise themselves for the road
Cai Zhao (Bao Shangen) and Song Yuzhi enter the chapter in travel clothes and mild chaos. The Six Sects have scouts on the post roads after the attacks, so they need disguises. Yuzhi brings supplies, plus a book called 100 Ways to Win a Lady Over, which exposes the private panic under his careful gentleman language.
The joke works because Zhao reads him too quickly. Yuzhi keeps talking about danger, caution, scouts, spies, and the rule that a gentleman should not stand beneath a crumbling wall. Zhao hears worry about Qingyan dressed as instruction.
Qingyan, for his part, already knows the truth. When told that Miss Cai has been stopped, he answers with the only question that matters: if she truly wanted to come, how could anyone stop her? The romance is still moving through evasion, not confession. Zhao carries golden silk armor because Qingyan once risked his life to save her. Yuzhi notices. Zhao calls it repayment, and she is not lying. She is also not saying the whole truth.
The market outside the Hanhai Mountains changes the texture. Zhao smells roasted buns before anyone else understands why she has brightened. Pancakes, wonton, mandarins, rain cloaks: business gathers right beside danger because Six Sects disciples and Li Sect watchers still need food, shelter, information, and dry shoulders. Zhao’s first instinct is not horror. It is commerce.
Then Xue Youfu appears and offers to lead them to Li Sect’s entrance.
Youfu is funny because he is shameless in plain sight. He explains that Li Sect people still buy hairpins and cloth, warns them about the Youming Path and its mechanisms, then doubles the price because there are two customers. Zhao sees the extortion and the life under it. “If not making a living, who’d choose to scrape by around the Li Sect?” she asks before paying him.
He takes the money and runs.
Nightmare Butterflies drag Zhao and Yuzhi into their own dreams
The Qingque Sect cover story collapses almost as soon as Qi Yunke looks at it. Yang Xiaolan says Zhao has chickenpox. Yuzhi has supposedly caught a chill. Feicui tries to hold the lie together, but the dummy in Zhao’s room sits too straight and reads Eighteen Years Waiting, a book Zhao hates because she thinks Li Baochuan is foolish. Qi Yunke does not need much more than that.
That scene gives the road story a useful counterweight. Zhao and Yuzhi are not being ignored by the adults; they are being chased by people who know them too well. Lord Song, meanwhile, is almost proud that his son managed to take Zhao away. The pigeon message from Qi Yunke cuts through his pleased mood: “Please join me to protect the kids.”
The kids do need protecting, though not in the simple way the adults imagine. The Hanhai route becomes a field of poison and dreams. Zhao and Yuzhi fall under the Nightmare Butterflies’ influence. Zhao dreams herself into Luoying Town success, with Qingyan as a follower praising her brilliant strategies and handing her the ledger. Yuzhi dreams that he has become a butterfly and flown away.
The danger is pretty until it is not. Zhao remembers her aunt’s lesson: the Nightmare Butterfly was born from Zhuang Zhou’s dream, feeds in dreams, and is more dangerous than the Guming Moth. Uncle Cheng’s amulet may be the reason they wake at all.
Then the route throws them from dream poison into bodily poison. The Toxins Abyss sequence is brisk and ugly: protective cloth, darts, running, water, pursuit. One moment they are inside a field of hallucination; the next, they are soaked, dirty, alive, and facing Black Slayers from the Demonic Camp.
Zhao and Yuzhi divide the fight with simple math. Left three, right two. No speech about courage. No ornamental duel language. They cut through the men who threatened Youfu, and the swindler they were ready to curse becomes a person with a village behind him.
Peace and Plenty changes the shape of Li Sect
Peace and Plenty is the important reveal. It is a Li Sect village, but it is not a nest of monsters. Children run to Uncle Xue for treats. Neighbors welcome him back. The village chief worries about rules because outsiders bring danger. Zhao has to revise the picture she brought with her.
Youfu defends his earlier betrayal by saying the road was too dangerous and he wanted to send them back. Zhao and Yuzhi do not buy the nobility of that excuse, but they also cannot reduce him to a cheat. He stole the golden silk armor from their bundle after they fell into the water, and the armor helped save his life when throwing darts hit him. His sickle helped save theirs. Zhao calls that even, then demands the armor back because it is meant as a gift.
Youfu says the nightmare fields were not always there. They appeared in recent years, supposedly to keep the Six Sects out. He arrived 17 or 18 years ago, when life under Li Sect was good enough for people to live honestly and peacefully. Lately, men have been seized to repair Bliss Palace. Hunters have been forced to gather toxic Shanci Mushrooms. Young men have gone missing. The Black Slayers are not ghosts. They are men taking other men.
Zhao covers fast when the village asks which sect she belongs to. She almost says Qingque, then invents the Qingzhu Gang by the Canglang River beneath Mount Wutong. Their gang leader died after drinking fake liquor. The gang fell apart. She and “senior brother” Dai Qingyun have nowhere to go and an uncle in Li Sect. It is ridiculous enough to feel like Zhao, and practical enough to work.
The village still cannot keep them overnight, but it gives them clothes and directions toward Qinglong Altar. The cloth belongs to Xing, the village chief’s granddaughter, who works there as a maid. Other villagers work there too, because monthly wages are better than hunting or farming. Now some servants have stopped sending news, and Xing has not returned for a long time.
That folds the opening plea back into the road plot. Xing is not an abstract hostage. She has a grandfather, a village, and a dress now being handed to Cai Zhao.
Qingyan ends with his own route chosen. He could use secret tunnels dug by his father to avoid checkpoints and go straight to Bliss Palace. Instead, he decides to walk the Youming Path openly. He tells Guanyue that a filthy room cannot be cleaned by replacing the owner when the beams have been eaten by snakes and rats. His answer is fire, then rebuilding.
He is done sneaking through a rotten house.
What works
- Zhao’s road comedy stays tied to character. Food, trade, books, and quick lies are not decoration; they are how she understands danger before she reaches for a blade.
- Qingyan’s mercy toward the Qinglong Altar master gives his rebellion a sharper rule than simple revenge. He values what people protect when their own position is collapsing.
- Peace and Plenty gives Li Sect territory human scale. The village does not excuse the sect’s cruelty, but it makes the cost visible through wages, missing servants, forced labor, and Xing’s absence.
- The Nightmare Butterfly section gives the route a wuxia flavor without losing plot clarity. Zhao’s dream of Luoying prosperity is funny, revealing, and dangerous at the same time.
What stumbles
- The middle stretch jumps hard: market guide, betrayal, nightmare field, poison route, water, Black Slayers, village. Each beat is readable, but the connective tissue is thin.
- Shangguan Haonan’s faction material is useful setup, yet it arrives before the travel chapter has settled. The political intrigue and the Zhao-Yuzhi road story compete for space.
- The dream danger could use one more breath after Zhao and Yuzhi wake. The amulet explanation is clear, but the emotional aftertaste disappears quickly once the chase begins.
What this sets up for Episode 13
Cai Zhao and Song Yuzhi are now pointed at Qinglong Altar with Xing’s clothes on their backs and a village’s missing people in their minds. Mu Qingyan is moving through the Youming Path by choice, not necessity, which means his next meeting with Li Sect will be public and bloody. Episode 13 should bring the rescue plot, the Qinglong servants, and Qingyan’s fire-cleaning vow onto the same road.
