Song Yunping falls, Chengyu returns on his own feet, and Baiheliang Mountain becomes the Fang family’s second courtroom.
The Fang family’s trap finally closes in Episode 10. Song Yunping walks into the Fang Mansion believing Chengyu is hidden in Eldest Madame’s room, only to find the family waiting for his confession. Jun Jiuling keeps her hands clean and her timing exact: she heals Chengyu, moves him toward Zezhou, and lets his enemies expose how old the Fang family’s wound really is. By the last scene, one traitor has been jailed, another official has been caught, and the one witness the Fangs need has already been silenced.
Song Yunping confesses inside the Fang Mansion
The opening begins with a small domestic calculation. Song Yunping’s men have traced the medicine deliveries to Eldest Madame’s room, and Song reads the pattern as a mother’s weakness. Chengyu must be there, he decides, because a mother would never abandon her son.
He is right about the feeling and wrong about the room.
Mrs. Fang and Senior Madame have prepared for him. When Song breaks in, he finds accusation instead of a sick young master. His first defense is not innocence. It is injury. He says the people who raised him into Deshengchang’s business still treated him like a dog. Half the shop, an investor’s position, the chief manager’s seat: none of it matters to him because, in his mind, those offers were charity.
That grievance has teeth and stays ugly. Song does not poison Chengyu because he lacks chances to rise. He poisons Chengyu because he cannot bear receiving status from the Fang family instead of seizing it from them. “That’s given by you, not what I want,” he says, and the line explains more than a longer villain speech could.
Then he says too much.
He admits he poisoned Chengyu. He admits Madame Su was part of his arrangement. County Magistrate Li Changhong is brought in after the confession, and Song Yunping is taken away. The Fang women win this round by making the traitor speak in public, but the victory already carries a bruise. Song names money as his motive. The answer is too small for a crime this patient.
Jun Jiuling prepares Chengyu for Zezhou
At Jiuling Hall, the tone narrows to recovery. Chengyu sits with medical books and business records in front of him, and his talk with Jun Jiuling is more tender than the usual cured-young-master beat. He is not only happy to walk. He is thinking about what walking means.
Before Jiuling treated him, Chengyu saw himself as a man waiting for death at home. Now he speaks of learning Deshengchang’s accounts, taking on the Fang family’s work, and holding up the sky for his grandmother and mother. The phrasing is large, but the feeling is plain. His legs give him movement. Jiuling gives him a future that requires discipline.
Haiping’s visit turns that private recovery into public proof. The man arrives shouting that he has recovered after four or five years of paralysis. He can lift heavy stones, walk dozens of steps, and cannot wait to tell Runan that Jiuling Drugstore has medicine with the “art of rejuvenation.” Jiuling checks him, tells him to conserve his energy, and sends him away with more medicine.
That balance matters because the next beat is not about fame. A letter arrives from Zezhou: Song Yunping has been arrested and jailed. Jiuling can start back. Chengyu does not yet know every detail, but the road home has become the road to the truth.
Zhu Zan stays close enough to be impossible to ignore. Jiuling offers him donkey meat because it is his hometown dish. He answers that he must get used to it if it belongs to her home. It is a small line, almost swallowed by the larger Fang plot, but it keeps their bond in the room. Later, when she tells him they are returning to Zezhou, he repeats it back softly.
Zhu Zan reads the road before the ambush
The first attack comes fast. The carriage stops, Mr. Lei runs forward, and steel finds Zhu Zan before anyone can settle the scene. He is injured, but he brushes Jiuling off with “Don’t worry.” That answer has become its own kind of stubbornness. He will bleed near her, but he will not ask her to carry the fear.
Jiuling understands the shape of the danger. The way back to Zezhou will not be peaceful. Changing routes may not help, because whoever arranged the attack can still find them. Steward Gao is supposed to meet them, so the party keeps moving and waits for the agreed escort.
The stop at the Fang home gives the conspiracy another face. A second lady sends food to her confined sister, who has been refusing the dishes. The maid calls the sender the only person in the family who still cares. Fang Jinxiu breaks down over her mother, Madame Su. She wanted to be a hero of the Fang family. Instead she has to live with the knowledge that her mother helped hurt it. “It’s all collapsed,” she says.
When Chengyu finally meets Steward Gao, his recovered legs become a public event. Gao has read the letter, but seeing Chengyu walk is different. Men crowd around him, and Chengyu corrects himself when he calls his wife Jiuling instead of Zhenzhen. Names are changing because power is changing. The sick heir is no longer a hidden patient. The doctor everyone underestimated has become Jun Jiuling in front of the household’s own men.
Zhu Zan’s jealousy lands right beside that triumph. Jiuling checks his wound and asks when he will stop acting this way. He replies with the line that defines his current restraint: he promised to escort her, and he will keep that promise. Everything else is none of her business.
He says it like a door closing.
Then, almost to himself, he adds that destiny makes fools of people. If he could go back, he would live up to her. Jiuling hears enough to ask if he is really fine. He does not give her the answer she wants.
Baiheliang Mountain exposes the older Fang case
Li Changhong visits Mrs. Fang while Chengyu is still away and urges the family to close Song Yunping’s case. Song has endured more than a month of interrogation and insists that no one ordered him. He says he acted for money. Li calls further interrogation useless.
Mrs. Fang listens politely. She also does not tell him when Chengyu will return.
That caution pays off at Baiheliang Mountain. Zhu Zan spots the wrongness of a “peace” signal and orders a detour. When the road narrows into a canyon, he warns Jiuling again. The ambush comes with shouts of “Kill,” and Mr. Lei recognizes it with a wound older than Chengyu’s poisoning: it is exactly like what happened fourteen years ago.
Jiuling tries money first. Thirty thousand taels for their lives. The attackers answer that they will take both the money and the lives. That sentence strips away the bandit cover. These men were not sent to rob. They were sent to erase the Fangs.
Mr. Lei’s part in the fight is the emotional center of the action. The same men destroyed his right arm fourteen years earlier. Jiuling asks whether he would accept a temporary recovery if she could give it to him. He says that if he can fight them again, he will have no regrets. She calls for needles, and a damaged body gets one more chance to answer the past.
His Green Lotus Stick Skills return in a burst of old discipline. The men scatter. Mr. Lei lives. Jiuling notes that his right arm may be saved. The Fang family’s old case has left bodies behind, and Jiuling keeps finding ways to let those bodies speak.
The false rescue party confirms the trap. Soldiers claiming to be from Huaiqing Prefecture arrive to suppress bandits, but Zhu Zan asks the questions a real official should be able to answer: who is the Commander-in-Chief, who leads the civil corps, where are they stationed, where is the written instruction? The fake soldiers announce that the Fang party has already been killed by bandits, and their own words become the evidence.
Then the second net drops. Henan Prefecture surrounds them and orders everyone to disarm. Chengyu understands at once that the plan he made with his grandmother has worked. The people behind the scenes are finally exposed.
For a breath, it looks like the road has given the Fangs everything. Li Changhong is jailed. Chengyu returns to Zezhou on his own feet. Senior Madame sees him walk and calls it a perfect ending. Zhu Zan leaves before gratitude can pin him down, saying only that he was paid.
But the final door opens onto a colder problem. The Fangs are allowed one meeting with Li Changhong before he is taken away. They need him to explain the case that has hurt three generations.
Before he can answer, news arrives: Song Yunping has been assassinated.
What works
- Song Yunping’s confession gives the Fang family a clean public victory while leaving the real motive unresolved.
- Chengyu’s recovery is handled through responsibility, not miracle sentiment. His first dream after walking is learning accounts.
- Zhu Zan’s road judgment keeps paying off in concrete choices: the detour, the canyon warning, and the interrogation of the false soldiers.
- Mr. Lei’s temporary recovery gives the action scene a personal reason to exist beyond spectacle.
What stumbles
- The villain side talks in heavy explanation once Li Changhong and his allies are alone. Their patience, money, and twenty-year planning are useful facts, but the dialogue lays them out rather neatly.
- Fang Jinxiu’s grief over Madame Su is strong, though it arrives in a brief pocket between larger plot turns and could use more room.
- Zhu Zan’s injured-guardian routine is effective, but his refusal to let Jiuling care for him is starting to circle the same emotional point.
What this sets up for Episode 11
Song Yunping’s assassination means the Fang family has proof, but not yet the full chain of command. Li Changhong is alive for now, and that makes him both a witness and a target. Jiuling, Chengyu, and Senior Madame have exposed one layer of the old case; the next fight is whether anyone can keep the remaining witness breathing long enough to name the people above him.
