A smallpox cure becomes a family wound, while three public protectors turn Miss Jun into capital gossip.
Episode 23 puts Dr. Jun inside Prince Huai’s mansion again, with Lu Yunqi standing close enough to turn medicine into surveillance. Prince Huai receives the smallpox vaccination, but the sharper pain comes after: old clothes, a dead sister’s name, and Jiurong mistaking Dr. Jun for Princess Jiuling. Outside that sickroom, Zhu Zan drinks through jealousy, Ning Yunzhao makes a false engagement useful, and every household calculates what Miss Jun’s rescue will cost.
Dr. Jun vaccinates Prince Huai under Lu Yunqi’s eye
Lu Yunqi arrives at Jiuling Drugstore with a question that sounds like an order: can Dr. Jun vaccinate Prince Huai now? She says she was going to do it in the next few days, then sends Liu’er for the medicine box. Lu Yunqi does not need to shout when the whole capital understands what his presence means.
Inside the Mansion of Prince Huai, the room empties around the boy. Dr. Jun checks him, decides he has improved enough, and explains the procedure gently. She will blow the smallpox viruses into his nose. It may itch. He must bear it and cannot sneeze.
“Don’t worry. Don’t be afraid.”
Prince Huai has survived politics before he has been allowed to survive childhood. Dr. Jun does not treat him as a symbol first. She gives him instructions he can follow: hold your breath, let the medicine enter, wait for the mark. Two hours later, she will stay through the night to care for him.
Lu Yunqi watches the recovery with a different hunger. He asks about Jiurong’s studies, riding, and archery. The tutor says Prince Huai is diligent and can shoot accurately, but still needs help riding alone. The questions sound like concern and feel like an inventory.
When one attendant asks why Dr. Jun was summoned for a visit Prince Huai did not seem to need, Lu Yunqi cuts him off. “Don’t ask about something that you shouldn’t worry about.” He has brought her here for medicine, and to see who recognizes whom.
Prince Huai mistakes Dr. Jun for Jiuling
The strongest stretch sits between Dr. Jun, Prince Huai, and the woman whose name still hurts every room she enters by memory.
After the vaccination, Prince Huai’s sister notices Dr. Jun’s care. So many doctors treated Jiurong, she says, but only Dr. Jun cured his real disease. Dr. Jun answers with the shield available to her: doctors are benevolent; it is her duty. The sister pushes closer. Jiurong does not trust easily, yet he is kind to Dr. Jun.
Dr. Jun answers, “Affinity is probably mutual.”
Her face can stay calm because she has had practice. Her private thought cannot. She wonders whether the other woman has seen through her or is sounding her out. She wants to tell the truth to Jiurong, but not yet. In this house, truth has to survive Lu Yunqi first.
Dr. Jun has not brought a change of clothes, so Prince Huai’s sister offers old garments. They are “just some common clothes,” she says, but Dr. Jun recognizes them as Jiuling’s. She remembers the embroidery and wonders whether this is accident or test.
Then Jiurong wakes.
“Jiuling, you appear in my dream again.”
Dr. Jun tells him he has mistaken her for someone else. He does not want a stranger wearing Jiuling’s clothes. His sister admits she gave them to her, and Dr. Jun immediately offers to take them off. Jiurong stops her. It is the only thing left by Jiuling, he says. He does not want Jiuling to leave nothing.
So Dr. Jun wears the dead woman’s clothing in front of the boy who loved her, while Lu Yunqi prepares something for the next morning. Affection gives Dr. Jun access. Grief makes her visible. Lu Yunqi is already arranging the next move around both.
Zhu Zan drinks through Ning Yunzhao’s rescue
While Prince Huai’s house carries grief quietly, Zhu Zan carries his out loud.
At first, the drinking looks like a strategy session. Miss Jun needs a man honest and upright, willing to speak for the people, not aligned with His Majesty yet still trusted by him, noble enough that imperial objection will not destroy him. Zhu Zan names Prince Xian, his twelfth uncle, a man who enjoys himself and avoids national affairs.
The political problem is real, but the wine has another source. Ning has claimed to be Miss Jun’s fiance. Zhu Zan insists he smashed the Arm Moral Department gate because he could not bear to see Lu Yunqi, and only incidentally stood up for her.
No one believes the word “incidentally.”
The capital has already turned the fight into a story: the new No. 1 Scholar, the governor of Arm Moral Department, and the son of Lord Cheng fought in the street for Her Ladyship. Someone calls that enviable. Miss Jun knows better. Protection can become another rumor.
She thanks Ning Yunzhao directly. He used their previous engagement as an excuse because he had no other way to intervene, but he does not mean to force her to fulfill it. Miss Jun understands the danger for him. He is newly appointed No. 1 Scholar, still rising. He says fame is mundane.
That is kind. It is also incomplete. Ning can afford to treat fame as small because other people will bear the domestic cost.
Miss Jun lets Zhu Zan ask the jealous question
Zhu Zan arrives late and drunk enough to ask what sober pride would swallow: how many husbands does Miss Jun have?
She answers him with merciless calm. Chengyu is first. Ning Yunzhao is second. He has seen the third one. Zhu Zan steps into the trap at once: “Me?” She cuts him down just as fast. Do not flatter yourself. She has a sweetheart.
The exchange works because Miss Jun keeps control of tone while Zhu Zan keeps losing control of posture. He calls himself a “talented hero” and cannot understand why she would need another husband after a rich one and a talented one. Then the joke turns. Just a name should not be enough to drive Lu Yunqi mad. Why does he persist in marrying her?
Miss Jun gives him tea and tries to send him away. He takes the wrong cup, lies down, and refuses to leave unless she tells him. The scene is comic on the surface, but Zhu Zan has noticed that Lu Yunqi’s obsession does not match the explanation the public has been given.
By morning, Miss Jun has the cleaner blade. Zhu Zan wakes confused and asks why she is in his room. She tells him to look around. He broke in late, asked how many husbands she had, and heard that she had a sweetheart.
“You had the cheek to ask me, so I had the cheek to answer you.”
That is Miss Jun at her sharpest here: not softening the truth for a man embarrassed by his own feelings, and not letting flirtation erase the darker fact underneath it. Lu Yunqi is still the third husband in the joke. He is also the man arranging tomorrow morning.
Wan Qing’s trail points toward a revenge attempt
The last movement turns from romance gossip back toward blood debt.
After Zhang Baotang and Sanbing tease Zhu Zan for sleeping in someone else’s bedroom, they bring news from the Sky Pavilion. Wan Qing, an orphan of the Wan family, appeared in Nanyuan Town and then disappeared. Zhu Zan lays out two possibilities: she was caught by the Arm Moral Department, or she entered the capital to avenge the Wan clan.
Both are bad. If Lu Yunqi caught her, he may hide her outside the imperial prison or kill her immediately. If she is free and hunting Huang Cheng and his son, revenge will only cost her life. Zhu Zan sends Baotang to the imperial prison and Sanbing across the capital. Stop her before she takes action.
Ning Yunzhao’s side of the story carries the quieter cost. His servant warns him that claiming the engagement may hurt Miss Jun with his mother, who already dislikes her. Yunzhao thinks his mother should be angry at him because he made the choice. The servant understands the household better: Madam will hate Miss Jun. Even if Miss Jun does nothing, that will not help.
The Ning family reaches the same conclusion from another room. The false engagement cannot be denied now, or the consequences will be worse. It must be admitted seriously, even kept secret at home. Meanwhile, the Fang family hears that Jiuling’s problem has been solved and debates why Ning Yunzhao helped at all.
They land on the only answer that respects Miss Jun’s intelligence: if she said he helped, then he helped. Jiuling will not let herself suffer.
That trust is touching. It is also a lot to place on one woman managing medicine, grief, drunken jealousy, public gossip, and men who think protection ends when their own intent is pure.
What works
- The Prince Huai material is strong because the medical details stay concrete: the nasal vaccination, the mark on the body, the night watch.
- Dr. Jun’s scenes with Jiurong carry the right restraint. She wants to tell the truth, but the danger around that truth feels immediate.
- Zhu Zan’s drunken jealousy gives the middle stretch some needed looseness without losing the sharper question about Lu Yunqi’s obsession.
- Ning Yunzhao’s false engagement has real social consequences. The episode lets the household politics bite after the public rescue.
- Wan Qing’s thread gives Episode 24 a clean external pressure: if revenge reaches Huang Cheng first, rescue may already be too late.
What stumbles
- The rhythm is slightly lopsided, with the Prince Huai material carrying more weight than the later household reactions.
- Zhu Zan’s drunk-room comedy runs long enough that Lu Yunqi’s threat briefly thins.
- Prince Xian is named as a possible political solution, but he does not yet have enough presence to make that option feel vivid.
What this sets up for Episode 24
Lu Yunqi’s preparations for the next morning are the immediate threat, especially with Dr. Jun now tied even more visibly to Prince Huai and Jiurong’s memory of Jiuling. Zhu Zan’s search for Wan Qing may collide with the Arm Moral Department before he has proof of where she went. Ning Yunzhao’s public claim has solved one crisis for Miss Jun while opening another inside his own family.
