In Perfect Crown Episode 02, Seong Huiju refuses to treat Grand Prince I-AN’s rejection as final. She follows him from a riding path to breakfast, a cat shelter, a movie, and a run, treating his wish for love as a campaign she can win. I-AN returns to public duty when the young King calls him in fear, then collapses from fever after the award ceremony where Huiju receives a flower of honor. By morning, hotel photos have made them a national scandal, and Huiju finally says the class wound out loud: she needs a title because merit has never been enough.
Huiju offers I-AN money, skin, and a clean divorce
Seong Huiju (IU) begins exactly where the premiere left her: on her knees before Grand Prince I-AN, asking him to marry her as if she is closing a merger before lunch. I-AN (Byeon Woo-seok) asks for conditions, and she gives him the only list a woman like Huiju would trust: money, family tree, business sense, an older brother too useless to interfere, and a public toughness built from surviving daily insults as “the bastard heiress of a corporate empire.”
She also offers herself as a human shield. If public criticism hits the royal family, she can take it. If the contract expires, they can divorce, and she will absorb the damage afterward too. The old archery wound is already hiding inside the business pitch.
I-AN refuses because he wants love. Huiju repeats that to Ms. Do (Lee Yeon) like she has been handed a defective document. She is not embarrassed for proposing without romance; she is annoyed that he has changed the rules after she prepared the right weapons. I-AN is surrounded by women performing calculated modesty. She has chosen to be the one impossible to ignore.
The palace side of the marriage game is quieter and colder. Queen Mother Yun receives Jaegyeong from the Kim family, while Prime Minister Min Jeongwoo (Noh Sang-hyun) says he would rather watch than play matchmaker. His logic is pure politics: conflict grows when more people enter, and the person who arranged the board can win.
Huiju follows I-AN until pursuit becomes performance
Huiju’s next strategy is absurd enough to be funny and exact enough to be a little alarming. She has Ms. Do use every available connection to locate I-AN’s informal appointments.
Then Huiju appears everywhere.
She meets I-AN on a riding path and says two days apart felt long enough to miss him. She appears at breakfast, at the cat shelter for Taekwon and Taeguk, during a movie, and on a run. Every stop repeats the same argument: if he wants love, she will court him until the idea has nowhere to hide.
That could become too cute if the pressure around them were lighter. Here, it stays pointed. I-AN rides outside the royal grounds because the palace feels cramped, and Huiju keeps finding the places where a prince is still watched.
Her own family keeps pushing from the other side. Dayeong reminds her about a marriage date with Kim Yeonjun, and Taeju warns that Chairman Seong may close Castle Beauty if Huiju skips again. Huiju attends and demolishes the meeting. When Yeonjun praises her art foundation, she says it is for money laundering. When he tries to keep the conversation polite, she asks whether they should marry in September or October.
The man is not the point. Huiju wants to know whether he understands the deal. If he wants her money, he can have more than he imagined. In return, can he devote himself to her rise? By the time I-AN’s private collection catches her eye on the museum wall, the answer is already no.
Choi Hyeon (Yu Su-bin) gives the hour a sweet comic pulse by taking both bosses seriously while being frightened of both. He has scouted Huiju and learned that she mostly works, eats with her assistant, watches movies, and had a school reputation for picking fights. Huiju may be reckless, but she is not random.
The King calls I-AN, and ceremony becomes rescue
The middle returns to the fire that still shadows the Crown. In a memory, the late King tries to resign the throne, only for Queen Mother Yun to answer that death would be better. When flames break out, her first clear question is where her nephew is, the heir to the throne.
That memory gives the young King’s morning more weight. He has slept badly again. Queen Mother Yun drills him on the flower of honor ceremony, reminding him to act with dignity before the business leaders being honored by the Crown. He has to show the world he can stand without his uncle.
He cannot.
I-AN says exactly that to Hyeon, because love does not make him sentimental about the monarchy. His nephew is a child. Then the King calls, whispers that he is scared, and I-AN comes anyway.
The award ceremony is all order and optics until I-AN enters. A staffer tries to block him; I-AN answers with protocol and security. Then he kneels into his real duty. He tells the King he came as a loyal subject, then takes the child’s hand in front of everyone.
Huiju receives the Best Entrepreneur Award moments later. The public version is polished: Castle Beauty, eco beauty, advanced technology, national pride. The private version is ridiculous and intimate. Huiju asks the King to place the flower on her head, then tells I-AN she missed him. He answers with royal formality in public, but the exchange is close enough for her to ask whether he will give her a prize too.
Prime Minister Min notices the optics: a Grand Prince on leave appearing beside both the King and a woman who wants to marry him. Min does not need to rush. He prefers currents he can let move by themselves.
Huiju hides I-AN, and the nation writes the romance for them
After the ceremony, I-AN’s body finally collects its debt. Hyeon finds medicine, keeps the palace uninformed, and avoids the royal hospital because Queen Mother Yun’s people are everywhere. Huiju runs into him at the hotel, calls her own doctor, and calmly asks the doctor to record her as the patient instead.
That is the first real care she gives I-AN without making it sound like strategy. She also feeds Hyeon a sandwich because he missed dinner in the panic. He explains why I-AN avoids palace treatment: doctors, kitchens, hospitals, photos, rumors, every form of concern becoming exposure.
Queen Mother Yun arrives before anyone can breathe. Hyeon panics. Huiju gets shoved into hiding. I-AN, still unwell, stops the Queen Mother at the door by saying he is not dressed properly and that she should wait. Huiju has just seen him use etiquette as a shield.
The shield breaks by morning. Photos place I-AN at the hotel, Huiju arriving later, both going out and returning with sandwiches. No Hyeon in the frame. No Royal Guard in the frame. Absence becomes proof. A doctor’s visit becomes pregnancy speculation. A hotel stay becomes a secret date. Ms. Do nearly short-circuits trying to contain it, while Huiju notices the sandwich shop has hit the jackpot.
The scandal clarifies the stakes because everyone reacts according to class, office, and appetite. Queen Mother Yun assumes the royal family will deny it and throw Huiju to the public. Ms. Do reminds Huiju that I-AN is loved by the entire country, worse than an idol because his fan base is everyone. Prime Minister Min does nothing because the uproar conveniently buries criticism over the minimum wage freeze.
I-AN makes the move they do not expect. He summons Huiju to his private residence. She asks about his fever, then repeats her old pursuit line: she missed him even though she saw him yesterday. He apologizes for dragging her into the scandal and making her a scapegoat. She answers with his own question from the rejected proposal.
This time, Huiju stops performing long enough to tell the truth. She remembers the flower of honor she won after defeating him at Royal Academy, and she admits losing to someone she could have beaten felt awful. Her father and the board are ready to swap her out for Taeju because he was born first, born male, and married into noble blood.
So yes, she wants an empty title. She wants it because she has missed too many chances without one. I-AN finally accepts, but he does not sell it as romance. He tells her to prepare to become the Grand Prince’s wife, because she will have to deal with the entire nation.
What works
- Huiju’s pursuit campaign is funny because it never forgets the wound underneath. The repeated “I missed you” gag starts as tactic, becomes public evidence, and returns in the private residence with a different charge.
- I-AN’s relationship with the young King gives him a warmer center without softening the politics. He still answers when a frightened child calls him uncle.
- The flower of honor motif ties the school and adult timelines cleanly. Huiju’s award, the archery loss, and the royal title all ask the same question: what counts as achievement when birth keeps changing the scoreboard?
- Hyeon and Ms. Do are excellent pressure valves. His hotel panic and her scandal triage keep the tone lively while showing how much invisible labor protects powerful people.
What stumbles
- The pursuit montage is intentionally broad, but it stretches the joke close to its limit. One fewer stop would have kept the rhythm tighter.
- Kim Yeonjun is useful as a mirror for Huiju’s marriage logic, but he barely exists beyond bewildered rich-boy politeness.
- The subtitle phrasing around the palace flashback is occasionally stiff, which makes the late King’s resignation memory less clean than the surrounding material. The emotional point lands, but the details ask for attention.
What this sets up for Episode 03
Huiju has the answer she wanted, but I-AN has warned her what the title costs. Episode 03 has to deal with public fury, Queen Mother Yun’s response, Prime Minister Min’s choice to let the scandal run, and the still-unresolved Junghwajeon Hall fire investigation. The engagement may protect Huiju from one family board, but it places her inside a national machine that knows how to choose a scapegoat.
