Three years after Mu-deok’s fall, Jang Uk meets a locked-away priestess who can see the ice stone inside him.
Jang Uk returns to Daeho as the man everyone needs and nobody wants near them. He carries Naksu’s sword, hunts soul shifters for the court, and sleeps with wraiths clawing at the power in his chest. Across the closed gates of Jinyowon, Jin Bu-yeon has spent three years hidden in an annex, treated less like a daughter than a future vessel for an heir. Their first meeting is funny, prickly, and loaded with the old grief neither of them can explain yet.
Jang Uk hunts a soul shifter at Yeongpo Dock
The three-year jump begins with a drought, a closed shrine, and a rumor market feeding on fear. Jinyowon will not let outsiders through its gates, even when the ancestral liquor for its rites has to be remade with different water. Inside, a woman slips from her room and looks at the world like someone starving for air.
That woman is Bu-yeon (Go Yoon-jung), though nobody outside Jinyowon knows she is alive.
Outside the gate, Daeho has turned Naksu into a ghost story and a business model. Men buy fake charms made, supposedly, from the powder of her petrified body. They joke about prices, then panic the moment a real soul shifter appears. The charm gag is broad, but the fear underneath it is real.
Then Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) arrives.
He is not introduced through softness. He cuts through the soul shifter and barely reacts when the frightened men realize he is the master of the Jang family, the man Naksu almost killed. The soul shifter he destroys is a father who stole his son’s body to live longer. Jang Uk calls that out with cold disgust before killing him.
The magic still has rules. Jang Uk has the ice stone inside him, but even his Tansu only makes a single drop. The difference is that one drop hurts enough. The soul shifter turns to stone, and the dock workers finally understand that Jang Uk is not another monster in front of them. He is the mage sent to kill monsters.
That does not free him from the rumor.
When one man offers him a charm that can supposedly ward off Naksu, Jang Uk looks at it and thinks about the impossible. “If I keep this, I couldn’t see you even if you ever returned.” He knows Naksu is dead. He also knows he still lives like someone waiting for a door to open.
Bu-yeon is locked inside Jinyowon
Jang Uk follows the soul shifter into Jinyowon, breaking through the forbidden space that Park Dang-gu (Yoo In-soo) and the others are not allowed to enter. Cho-yeon (Arin) blocks Dang-gu at the gate, and the wound between them is still raw. He tries to apologize for what happened to her father. She tells him to keep carrying it.
Jinyowon has not simply mourned for three years. It has shut itself away, sealed its doors, and hidden Bu-yeon behind a barrier. Jin Ho-gyeong calls her daughter “Bu-yeon, dear,” but the room says something colder than affection.
Jang Uk finds her while hunting the soul shifter. She points a poker at him, asks how he broke through the barrier, and immediately tries to recruit him into her escape. Their exchange has the old Alchemy of Souls snap: irritation, bargaining, curiosity, and one person realizing the other is stranger than expected.
Bu-yeon can see the sky’s energy inside him. Jang Uk is used to being feared for the ice stone, punished for it, rewarded for it, and avoided because of it. Bu-yeon names what is there without flinching. She does not know the history wrapped around that power. She only knows what she can see.
He refuses to take her with him at first. Helping a locked-up Jinyowon priestess would make his bad relationship with the family worse. He even destroys the escape route she spent three days building, because he does not want her disappearance linked to him.
Then she tells him her crime.
“The crime of living,” she says. “I’m guilty of being born.” She says she died a long time ago, and that her existence in the world is the reason she is locked away. Jang Uk hears the part nobody else in the room could hear. He is also alive when he should not be. He was burned on a funeral pyre and returned with the ice stone in his chest. He knows what it means to be treated like proof that the natural order has been broken.
So he builds her a better way out. Not a rescue. Not yet. Just enough furniture stacked beneath the window for her to make her own choice, and a warning to wait long enough that he is not blamed.
Daeho treats Jang Uk like a necessary monster
Songrim has changed around Jang Uk’s absence from ordinary life. Park Dang-gu is the leader now, but he still does not know how to stand near the friend whose survival cost everyone so much. Park Jin (Yoo Jun-sang) has stepped down, grows balsam flowers, and terrorizes the household with enormous batches of kimchi.
The comedy matters because it shows what grief did not destroy. Park Jin and Maidservant Kim still speak in food, chores, and tears. Dang-gu still gets drunk enough to cry over Cho-yeon when he thinks she is marrying someone else. Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) returns with guilt in his mouth and apologizes for running away when Jang Uk and Mu-deok were suffering.
But Jang Uk lives apart from all of them.
Master Lee explains the price. A human using the energy of the sky attracts wraiths that feed on that power. They are cold, pitiful, and always around him. That makes the strong liquor less like self-indulgence and more like a habit built for survival.
The court has found a way to use him without welcoming him back. The Unanimous Assembly and the royal family have him kill soul shifters, then send the Crown Prince Go Won (Shin Seung-ho) with a reward. Jin Mu frames the arrangement with malice: the public praises the Crown Prince for ordering the purge, while Jang Uk becomes “a monster who catches other monsters.”
Go Won hates the arrangement because it keeps Jang Uk close enough to shame him. He calls him a dark and ominous lunatic. Jang Uk answers by making him say the quiet part aloud. The Crown Prince wants to dismiss him as arrogant, but he cannot deny the power. He wants to feel wounded by Jang Uk’s contempt, but Jang Uk reminds him that a splinter under the fingernail is not the same as a sword through the chest.
That sword is still there. Later, Park Jin asks whether removing the ice stone would also remove the pain of the sword buried in Jang Uk’s chest. Jang Uk says he should have died back then. Survival itself has become too heavy to hold.
Jang Uk crashes Bu-yeon’s secret wedding
Bu-yeon’s escape is not freedom. It is a four-hour window.
She heads to Chwiseonru looking for the Seo family man chosen as her groom. Her logic is desperate and clear: if the man agrees to Jin Ho-gyeong’s terms, Bu-yeon will spend the rest of her life locked in the same room, producing a daughter with divine powers for Jinyowon.
The Chwiseonru sequence lets Bu-yeon be funny without making her situation cute. She hears about the four desirable men of Daeho: Crown Prince Go Won, Park Dang-gu, Seo Yul, and Jang Uk. She thinks Seo Yul must be the perfect suitor, then spots Jang Uk and recognizes a better weapon against her mother. If the point is to be thrown out of Jinyowon, marry the man Jinyowon already resents.
So she asks Jang Uk to marry her.
He calls her crazy. She insists she is practical. He tells her to use her beauty to find another groom. She tells him to look her in the eye and reconsider because she is a rare beauty. She is not asking for romance. She is asking for an exit.
Jang Uk nearly leaves her to be taken back. Then the missing piece arrives at the dinner table in Songrim. Yul explains that Bu-yeon would have had powers like Jin Seol-ran, Jinyowon’s first leader. Jang Uk asks the question that changes his decision: could a priestess that powerful extract the ice stone?
Now Bu-yeon is not only a trapped woman who can see his energy. She may be the person who can remove the thing keeping him alive and killing him slowly.
Jin Ho-gyeong’s chosen groom is not Seo Yul. He is Seo Yun-o, a man with enough Seo family connection to be useful and enough need to obey Jinyowon. Cho-yeon understands exactly what that means. He will never free her sister.
Bu-yeon waits in her bridal clothes with the petal that once came to her when she was desperate. She says she will wait for her husband. For a while, it looks like nobody is coming.
Then the doors open.
Jang Uk walks in, not as a romantic savior but as a man who has decided her usefulness and her plea point in the same direction. Bu-yeon smiles like she knew he would come. He says he thought he might need her help. She takes his hand and leaves with one claim: “Let’s go now, my husband.”
What works
The time jump gives every returning character a visible scar. Dang-gu has responsibility but no ease. Cho-yeon has anger where a wedding should have been. Yul returns with the quiet shame of someone who survived by leaving. Park Jin and Maidservant Kim bring warmth, but even their domestic rhythm circles Jang Uk’s damage.
Bu-yeon’s first hour lands because she is not written as a mystery box alone. She is lonely, vain, funny, frightened, and brutally aware that her mother plans to use her body for Jinyowon’s future. The lightness never erases the captivity underneath it.
Jang Uk’s new life is specific. The wraiths, the liquor, the empty Jeongjingak, Naksu’s sword, the reward visits, and the fake Naksu charms all point to the same wound from different angles. He is alive, but Daeho has made that survival useful before it has made it bearable.
The first Jang Uk/Bu-yeon meeting has immediate charge. She wants a way out. He wants distance. Then both realize the other can see a forbidden part of them.
What stumbles
The amount of reset business is heavy. Between the soul-shifter purge, Jinyowon’s secrecy, the court arrangement, Seo Yul’s return, Park Jin’s retirement, Dang-gu and Cho-yeon’s breakup, and Bu-yeon’s wedding, the premiere has a lot to place.
Jin Ho-gyeong’s treatment of Bu-yeon is clear, but the maternal pain behind it gets less room than the control. That may be intentional for now, though the mother-daughter wound needs more shading if Part 2 wants the captivity thread to cut deeper.
The comic food detour with Park Jin is welcome after so much coldness around Jang Uk, but it runs long enough to briefly slow Bu-yeon’s escape.
What this sets up for Part 2 Episode 02
Bu-yeon’s existence is about to become public, and Jang Uk has made himself the problem Jinyowon cannot quietly solve. Her missing memories matter as much as her divine powers. She can see the ice stone, but she does not yet know why Jang Uk looks at Naksu’s name like a wound that still answers him.
The next step is the bargain. Jang Uk needs Bu-yeon because she may be able to remove the ice stone. Bu-yeon needs Jang Uk because he is the only person strong enough to defy her mother. The romance begins in the gap between those needs, with one person carrying memories the other cannot reach.
