Bu-yeon gets her memories back just as Jang Uk decides to wait for her, and Daeho moves toward another catastrophe.
Jang Uk and Bu-yeon reach for happiness before anyone has time to protect it. They have stopped pretending and started talking like people who might build a life together. Then Naksu remembers what she did to the man standing in front of her.
The romance has warmth. That is what makes it hurt.
Bu-yeon and Jang Uk choose each other before the truth catches up
Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) has the ice stone still burning inside him and Bu-yeon close enough to feel it. She asks whether she could really take it out. He admits the thought that has been sitting inside him since Part 2 began: he always wanted everything to stop, but now he does not really want that anymore.
That confession lands quietly. Uk has lived for three years like a dead man kept moving by power he never asked for. Bu-yeon has become the one person who makes him hesitate before calling death a release. She hears the danger in that, and her answer is firm: even if he thinks that way, she will never do it for him.
Then they turn to the practical mess outside the room. Uk has to deal with the promise between Songrim and Jinyowon. Bu-yeon has to face Jin Ho-gyeong. The comedy is soft but tense: Bu-yeon imagines Uk trying to convince her mother with a polite marriage plea, then startles herself by mentioning needles she should not remember.
Bu-yeon goes home because she does not want Ho-gyeong to hate Uk even more. Uk lets her go because he thinks they are now choosing each other with open eyes. Before they separate, the scene gives them one of the loveliest mirrors in Part 2. Bu-yeon remembers the first time she saw him and says, “You’re my husband.” Uk remembers the first time he saw Mu-deok’s blue marks and thought, “You are my master.”
This time, he recognized her first.
For a moment, that feels like grace. Uk does not need her to remember everything. He knows enough for both of them, or thinks he does. Bu-yeon does not know the full weight of what he is carrying, but she knows she wants to stay beside him.
Seo Yul asks Ho-gyeong to give Naksu a little time
Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) wakes from his own brush with death and chooses mercy before strategy. He knows Bu-yeon is Naksu. He knows what he planned to do at Danhyanggok. He also knows the worse truth from Master Lee: once Jin Bu-yeon’s true soul awakens fully, Naksu’s soul will disappear.
That knowledge changes his posture. Yul does not expose her to punish her. He goes to Ho-gyeong and tells her that locking Naksu in Jinyowon will not save anyone. If Naksu wants to stay with Uk, Yul wants to help her do that, even briefly.
His line to Ho-gyeong carries the whole dilemma: “This is obviously a threat, but it is a plea as well.” He is threatening her with the truth, yes. He is also begging a mother to let a doomed soul spend her last days where she wants to be.
Yul’s scenes with Bu-yeon are even sadder because she still calls him a friend. She can tell he is hurting. She asks if they met before at Danhyanggok, and he tells her to go there if she wants to find out who she really is. Her answer is immediate. If the real her cannot be with Jang Uk, she does not want to know.
That is not ignorance as cuteness. It is self-preservation.
Bu-yeon has spent these episodes building a self out of fragments: a room she escaped, a husband she chose, memories that feel borrowed, and a body everyone else keeps naming for her. Yul grants her time because he knows time is almost all she has left.
Yun-ok exposes the blue marks in Bu-yeon’s eyes
The one person who refuses to give Bu-yeon time is Heo Yun-ok. She reads Yul’s letter, takes medicine meant to reveal a soul shifter’s scar, and brings Bu-yeon to the graves Uk made for the soul shifters he killed.
Yun-ok says she only wants to confirm what is unknown. That sounds gentle until she throws the medicine on Bu-yeon.
Uk arrives before Yun-ok can finish the public accusation, but the damage is already done. Bu-yeon sees her reflection. The blue marks have blossomed in her eyes. The words Uk used earlier return to her, and the thing she has been trying not to know finally becomes impossible to avoid.
Then Danhyanggok opens.
The memory rush comes through objects and old promises: the tree, the blue jade, the bird’s eggs, the climb to the top, the first recognition between master and pupil. Bu-yeon remembers being Naksu. She remembers loving Uk. The memories were never someone else’s.
She also meets the other presence inside the body. Jin Bu-yeon tells her the body has become whole because of her, most of her divine powers have returned, and Naksu has to leave because the body is not hers.
Bu-yeon (Go Yoon-jung) does not move through this reveal like someone getting a clean identity back. She comes back into the world crushed by recognition. Memory gives her the truth, but not permission. She knows Uk. She knows she loved him. She knows she hurt him so badly that he built a life around the wound.
So when Uk finds her, she does not say, “It’s me.”
She says she remembered someone she liked very much.
Uk hears it as rejection. He tells her that her lost memories do not matter anymore, that he is all right with whatever she was. She cannot accept that because he is the person she is talking about, standing in front of the answer she feels too guilty to give.
When she says she cannot go near the man she remembered because she hurt him too much, Uk hears another man. We hear the punishment Naksu has chosen for herself.
She asks him to turn the light on and let her go.
It is a simple request. It cuts like a blade.
Jang Uk leaves for North Fortress and returns in secret
While the romance breaks open, the palace makes its move. The Crown Prince (Shin Seung-ho) summons Uk with the Gold Plaque, the symbol left for the king’s successor. Jin Mu has been feeding his fear of the King’s Star.
He does not ask Uk to fight. He asks him to leave.
Uk understands the trap at once. If he fights over the plaque, he becomes the threat Jin Mu wants everyone to see. If he backs down, he protects Daeho from a succession crisis and removes himself from the center of power. The Crown Prince reads him correctly: Uk fights to protect, not to gain.
That does not make the Crown Prince strong. It makes him easier for Jin Mu to use. The turtle thread matters here too: Jin Mu calls it a weak animal that does not suit him, while Master Lee later recognizes it as a sacred animal with the energy of the Black Tortoise, the guide for those who are lost.
Uk accepts the North Fortress command, but his heart is still in Jinyowon. He tries to leave with dignity after Bu-yeon refuses to see him. Then he does the thing she once asked him to do: he comes in secret.
Their farewell is all anger, jealousy, and honesty. Uk asks whether the man she remembered looks like him. She tells him to leave it at that. He cannot. He has thought it over and knows he is not staying because he is confused or crazy. He liked her so much he lost his mind.
Then he lists what she gave him. She helped him face memories he could not face. She held his hand when he thought no one would. She helped him sleep.
So he chooses to wait.
The brazier image returns from earlier in the season, but now it is no joke. Uk says he will be the brazier on a summer day she does not miss. He will wait until she misses him. Bu-yeon answers with the only promise she can safely give: she will come back to him one day.
He leaves without knowing that she already has.
Jin Mu sends Bu-yeon into Gwido
Jin Mu’s plan widens around the rite of the lake. Earthenware washes up from Lake Gyeongcheondaeho, the capital panics about drought, and Cheonbugwan uses that fear to push the Unanimous Assembly toward the lake rite. The real target is Jinyowon and the fire bird inside it.
Jin Mu needs Jinyowon weakened. He goes after Ho-gyeong’s authority, her age, her daughters, and the Jinyowon Plaque. Ho-gyeong pushes back with the plaque that lets Jinyowon reject the king’s orders, but the room is already stacked against her.
Then Bu-yeon arrives.
She has just remembered Jin Mu as the man who made her an assassin, used her, and killed her. Now she walks into the Assembly as the eldest daughter of Jinyowon. She does not come as Uk’s wife or Ho-gyeong’s secret. She comes with the plaque in her hands and her name in her mouth.
Jin Mu tests her by throwing the plaque into Gwido, the dark prison behind Cheonbugwan where sorcerers’ wraiths remain. If she can retrieve it by sundown, he will acknowledge her divine powers and cancel the Assembly. Ho-gyeong panics. Bu-yeon tells her to have faith in her daughter’s powers.
She takes the turtle with her because it has good energy, then steps into a prison that looks less like a cell than an entire dead shore. The cliffhanger waits until Uk appears inside Gwido too. He sees the thing in her eyes and asks the question Part 2 has been circling for eight episodes.
“Who are you?”
Now the answer is finally close enough to speak.
What works
The romance works because no one is simply hiding the truth for convenience. Yul is trying to buy Naksu time. Bu-yeon is trying not to force Uk back into the worst pain of his life. Uk is trying to love the woman in front of him without demanding a full account of who she used to be.
The Danhyanggok memory rush ties recognition to objects fans already remember. The blue jade, the tree, the bird’s eggs, the master-pupil language, and the hand promises do the emotional work without overexplaining the old love story.
The Crown Prince material has a firmer pulse than it has had in some earlier Part 2 stretches, especially once the lost turtle becomes a quiet measure of his conscience.
What stumbles
Yun-ok’s jealousy is effective as a plot trigger, but the scene at the graveyard makes her feel thinner than the people around her. She has reasons to worry about Uk and Naksu, yet the medicine splash plays mostly as romantic spite.
The political mechanics also pile up quickly: Gold Plaques, Jinyowon Plaques, the lake rite, earthenware, the Night Watch, the Unanimous Assembly, the fire bird, Gwido, and North Fortress all compete for space.
There is also a slight frustration in how long Uk remains one sentence away from the truth. By the time he says he will wait, the audience is waiting for somebody to tell him the person he misses is the person he is losing again.
What this sets up for Part 2 Episode 09
Episode 09 has to answer Uk’s question inside Gwido. If he recognizes Naksu in Bu-yeon’s eyes, the problem is no longer memory. It becomes choice. Master Lee has already named the impossible edge: Uk has the power of Hwansu, which means he may be able to save Naksu by committing a forbidden act against Bu-yeon’s soul.
Jin Mu is also moving toward the fire bird, and the lake rite gives him public cover. Bu-yeon entering Gwido with the Black Tortoise beside her places romance, divine power, and Daeho’s political crisis in the same room at last.
Episode 09 needs Uk to see clearly.
Then it has to ask what love can refuse.
