Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow Episode 07 Recap: Jang Uk Blows Out the Lantern

Yul’s life hangs by a thread, and Jang Uk learns the difference between using fear and being ruled by it.
Episode 07 begins in the worst possible place: Seo Yul is dying, and Jang Uk is holding a sword with every reason to use it. The blood parasite in Yul’s body has reached his core of energy, So-i is dead, and Cheonbugwan’s name is all over the crime. For a few minutes, Daeho feels one bad breath away from open war. Then Uk stops, thinks, and chooses the living friend over the dead enemy.
Jang Uk walks to Cheonbugwan with Yul’s life on the line
Yul’s condition turns private grief into public danger almost immediately. The blood parasite is eating away at his core of energy and threatening the balance between Songrim, Cheonbugwan, the royal family, Jinyowon, and Seoho Fortress.
If Yul dies, his Lantern of Life at Seoho Fortress goes out. His father, General Seo, will come to the capital looking for the truth. Daeho does not need much more than this to become a battlefield.
That is why Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) heading toward Cheonbugwan lands with such force. He has spent three years hunting soul-shifters, swallowing rage, and letting everyone treat him like a weapon they would rather keep sheathed.
“Not a single person here will leave this place alive.”
He means it when he says it at the gambling den. He also means it when he reaches Cheonbugwan and tells Go Won (Shin Seung-ho) to step aside. Uk is not bluffing about killing Jin Mu. He is not bluffing about cutting through anyone protecting him either.
Go Won’s choice matters because he does not stand in front of Uk to defend Jin Mu. He stands there because he knows what Uk has been carrying, and because he knows he has a place inside that history.
That is where their strange, bruised bond pays off. Go Won is proud, petty, royal, and still capable of doing the right thing when it counts. Park Jin (Yoo Jun-sang) arrives with Songrim behind Uk and says the same thing in a different language: if Uk moves, Songrim moves with him, so he must move with thought.
Uk listens.
Not because his anger fades. It does not. He waits because the target in front of him changes. Jin Mu’s death can wait. Yul’s life cannot.
Lady Jin sells Yul’s cure for Bu-yeon’s return
Jin Mu is cornered from every direction. The Unanimous Assembly does not rally around him. The mages look at the possible war with Seoho Fortress and tell him to beg, apologize, or offer his life if that is what prevents disaster.
He does beg. First to Jin Ho-gyeong, then in front of Uk.
But Ho-gyeong is not moved by his panic alone. The blood parasite came from Jinyowon, and Jin U-tak helped put that relic into the world, but she has no interest in making Jin Mu’s life easier. She only shifts when the pressure touches Jinyowon too. If Seo Yul dies and the blame spreads, her house can burn with Cheonbugwan.
So she names her price.
She will help save Yul if Uk sends Jin Bu-yeon (Go Yoon-jung) back to Jinyowon.
It is a cruel bargain because Uk cannot pretend he has time to negotiate. Yul is dying now. Bu-yeon is standing in the life Uk built after death, the house where she has annoyed him, comforted him, protected him, and kept his nights from becoming only cold air.
He agrees, and Bu-yeon still does not fully know what she is being traded around. She knows Uk has chosen to send her back, and she knows enough to feel the rejection. She does not know that the ice stone in his chest is tied to the death wish he hid from her.
The asymmetry keeps cutting. Uk understands more than he says. Bu-yeon feels more than she can explain.
Park Jin tries to pull Uk back toward sense with a simple question: if Maidservant Kim and Park Jin were both drowning, who would Uk save first? Uk says Maidservant Kim. Park Jin is offended, naturally, but his point is right. Yul and Bu-yeon are both drowning.
“If someone is so dear to you, don’t ever think of letting them go and abandoning them.”
Uk hears it. He is not ready to live by it yet.
Bu-yeon carries Yul’s life into Jinyowon
The cure is complicated in the way Alchemy of Souls magic should be. The blood parasite is an insect from Jinyowon, made with Jin family blood, now lodged inside a mage’s core of energy. To save Yul, Master Heo has to lure it out, make it give back the torrent of energy it has consumed, and use the fire bird without breaking the barrier around it.
No small thing, then.
Yul cannot be moved. The fire bird cannot be moved. The barrier around it is too dangerous to break. The solution becomes a chain of exact objects: the water wick from Yul’s Lantern of Life, a Jin family body, thirty thousand nyang in gold, and someone strong enough to survive the room if everything goes wrong.
The rescue breathes through both danger and comedy. Cho-yeon is willing to carry Yul’s energy until Master Heo mentions pregnancy as a possible risk, and Dang-gu nearly launches himself across the room to stop her. Uk and Bu-yeon both insist there is no chance of that in their own marriage, which tells the room far too much.
Then Uk reveals he has thirty thousand nyang in gold sitting at Jeongjingak because he never spent the Crown Prince’s rewards for killing soul-shifters. The money came from the work that made him feared, and now it becomes the thing that helps save Yul.
Go Won also enters the rescue through the turtle.
Bu-yeon finally realizes the “Turtle Shaman” she met was the Crown Prince. Go Won finally realizes Bu-yeon is the woman whose husband has been troubling her. Uk finally realizes the turtle has been building an alliance behind his back.
It works because it softens people without making the stakes smaller. Go Won does help. Uk does accept his help.
Inside Jinyowon, Bu-yeon carries Yul’s remaining life in her mouth and cannot speak. She cannot argue, reassure Uk, or turn pain into banter. She has to endure the parasite moving through her bloodstream while Uk waits until it gives back Yul’s torrent of energy.
When the parasite emerges, Uk catches it. When time almost runs out, they rush the energy back to Yul. When Yul’s pulse returns, the room erupts with relief.
Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) lives.
The lantern flickers until Uk tells the truth
The aftermath becomes quiet and mean again.
Uk has saved Yul, but the bargain remains. Ho-gyeong prepares Bu-yeon’s room and tells Cho-yeon that Uk gave his word. Maidservant Kim hears that he means to send Bu-yeon back and reacts with the correct fury: Bu-yeon is not an object.
Bu-yeon refuses to let Uk frame it as his choice. She says she is leaving by her own will. Her mother gave her a promise that Jinyowon will not be like before, and Bu-yeon says she has nothing to lose by going.
Then she ruins the lie in the next breath.
She feels bad leaving Uk because she promised to help him sleep. She asks why he really brought her home. He says it does not matter anymore. He says he will not need her help with that again. He calls a brazier in summer useless, and she gives him the line he deserves:
“Your useless brazier is leaving as nothing more than ashes after burning out. I’ll disperse into the wind, and you can freeze to death all alone.”
Good. Let him sit with that.
Yul wakes after three days, learns So-i died, and learns Bu-yeon helped save him. He asks Master Lee about her because he understands what others have missed.
Master Lee tells him the truth plainly. There are two souls in Bu-yeon’s body. The body belongs to Jin Bu-yeon, and once Bu-yeon’s soul fully awakens, Naksu’s soul will disappear. Every recovered memory becomes both return and countdown. The woman Uk is reaching for may be coming back only to vanish.
Meanwhile, Young Lady Heo finds Yul’s sealed letter and learns the name everyone has been circling: Naksu. That secret is no longer sitting only with Yul and Master Lee.
Uk does not know all of that yet. What he has is a lantern that keeps turning off and on. When it burns, he can pretend he is sane. When it goes dark, he wants to see Bu-yeon.
So he goes to Jinyowon, finds she is not there, and then finds her at Jeongjingak with the Spirit Plaque. Finally, he tells her the part he owed her from the beginning. He brought her home because he hoped she could remove the ice stone from him. Removing it would kill him. He did not tell her at first because he thought she did not need to know. Later, he could not tell someone so determined to protect him.
That apology gives Bu-yeon a real choice instead of another half-truth. She was miserable thinking he abandoned her because she was no longer useful. Now he says the opposite: he is grateful, and he is sorry.
She still refuses to make it easy for him. She says she never wants to see him again, or she may rip the stone out herself. That anger is earned.
Then Uk tells the truth beneath the truth. When the lantern is on, he understands he has to send her back. When it turns off, he goes mad and wants to see her. That is why he came.
Bu-yeon answers by blowing out the light.
No argument. No permission slip from Jinyowon. No polite goodbye. Just darkness, breath, and a choice.
What works
Uk’s rage takes a smarter shape than slaughter. He can terrify Cheonbugwan, humiliate Jin Mu, and force Ho-gyeong’s hand without losing Yul to revenge.
The fire bird rescue is the right kind of fantasy problem. The water wick, Seo family’s Lantern of Life, Jin blood, gold barrier, blood parasite, and fire bird all have rules. The sequence feels urgent because every object has a job.
Go Won is excellent here. His stand in front of Uk, his turtle reveal, and his work inside Jinyowon all move him toward the person Bu-yeon accidentally believed he might be.
Bu-yeon’s silence during the operation is a strong choice. She cannot talk through the pain or charm her way out of it. She has to carry Yul’s life and trust everyone else to get the timing right.
The lantern ending lands because the metaphor is simple. Light means control. Darkness means want. Bu-yeon does not ask him which one he prefers. She turns the light off.
What stumbles
The medical-magic explanation is satisfying, but it is also dense. The blood parasite, the water wick, the Jin blood link, the fire bird barrier, and the gold all arrive in one stretch.
Ho-gyeong’s bargain is effective drama, though her emotional position can feel cramped. She wants Bu-yeon back, fears losing control of Jinyowon, hates Jin Mu, and still helps save Yul. All of that tracks, but her inner conflict moves quickly.
Young Lady Heo learning the Naksu secret from Yul’s letter is useful setup, yet it arrives late and quietly enough that it risks feeling like a plot handoff rather than a character turn. The next chapter needs to make that knowledge matter.
What this sets up for Part 2 Episode 08
Yul is alive, but he now knows Naksu’s soul may disappear once Bu-yeon’s soul fully awakens. Young Lady Heo has found the same secret from another angle. Jin Mu has placed the King’s Star in Go Won’s hands, giving the Crown Prince a reason to fear Uk again just as the two men have started to trust each other.
And Uk has stopped pretending Bu-yeon is only a cure, a guest, or a bargain he can honor cleanly. The lantern is out. Episode 08 has to deal with what he chooses when the room is dark.
