Bu-yeon remembers Naksu, Jang Uk chooses duty, and Jin Mu survives long enough to drag Daeho toward one last disaster.
Part 2 Episode 09 is the penultimate reckoning, so everyone has to stop hiding behind softer names for the same wounds. Jin Bu-yeon remembers that she is Naksu, Jang Uk knows exactly whom he has found, and Go Won finally admits that his turtle matters because it gave him a reason to stop following a monster. Gwido, Jinyowon, the ice stone, the soul-shifter purge, and the fire bird all move at once.
No one gets a clean mercy.
Bu-yeon summons Jang Uk into Gwido
The chapter opens inside Gwido with the sentence Part 2 has been circling for weeks: Jin Bu-yeon is not simply Jin Bu-yeon. Her blue mark has returned inside her eyes, and with it comes the memory of the soul inside this body.
Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) does not flinch from the answer. He has spent this season recognizing pieces of Naksu before Bu-yeon could carry the name herself. When Go Won arrives and asks whether she is safe, Uk says she was only startled by the wraiths and that she is calming down.
Then he draws the line everyone else has to respect: only he is allowed to come this close.
That possessiveness could read badly in a thinner romance. Here, it lands as grief trying to behave. Jang Uk is protecting the one secret that will either save Bu-yeon long enough to choose or turn her into his next target. If Daeho knows Naksu is alive inside Jinyowon’s heir, the old duty returns with a blade in it.
Gwido also widens the mythology as the romance tightens. Bu-yeon finds a corpse with an ice stone inside it, but this one is wrong. It lacks the energy of the sky. Like a soul shifter that has run wild, it only seeks human energy. That gives Jin Mu’s punishment a shape later.
The quietest wound in Gwido belongs to him for a moment. Go Won (Shin Seung-ho) admits he wanted the girl he liked all for himself, and that his desire to destroy what he could not have helped drive him against Jang Uk. He wants Naksu to know that he has been in pain since she died.
Bu-yeon answers like Naksu would. She says Naksu would probably be happy to hear he is suffering, but she would not want the pain to last forever.
Bu-yeon carries Naksu’s memory, Bu-yeon’s body, Jin Seol-ran’s divine echo, and everyone else’s need for a verdict. She is a person, but she is also the place where other people’s sins keep arriving.
Go Won chooses his turtle over Jin Mu
The turtle business is absurd, but it gives Go Won one honest reason to turn on Jin Mu.
Not because he has suddenly become a pure royal savior. Not because he has found a grand public cause. Jin Mu threw out the turtle he cared for, and that petty cruelty helped Go Won see the whole man. Jang Uk believes this reason faster than he would believe a polished speech about saving the world.
He should.
Alchemy of Souls has always used small objects to expose large loyalties: the jade eggs, Naksu’s sword, Seo Yul’s whistle, the Spirit Plaque, the ice stone. Here, the turtle gets out of Gwido, leads Jang Uk and Go Won to the door, and later earns Master Lee’s Black Tortoise explanation. It gives Jang Uk access to Bu-yeon when the larger plan should have kept him away.
Go Won’s temporary hiding place with Jang Uk brings the lightest stretch before the killing starts. He complains about cobwebs. Uk fumes because the woman he loves may have remembered an old flame who does not recognize her. Go Won arrives at the wrong conclusion: the other man must be married.
The joke has bite. Jang Uk can reach Hwansu and carry the ice stone in his chest, yet he cannot ask his wife the one question that matters without risking the battle against Jin Mu.
The political plan is simple and dangerous. Go Won will remain near Jin Mu long enough to gather the hidden soul shifters. Jang Uk will pretend to go north, return quietly, and kill them all at once. Jinyowon will be defended when Jin Mu moves for the fire bird.
The plan works because everyone accepts how ugly the work is. Jin Mu’s secret organization is made of people who took bodies for youth, beauty, power, and survival. Daeho cannot heal while they wait for an ice stone that will let them live forever inside stolen lives.
Jang Uk traps seventy-eight soul shifters
Before the purge, the bell potion changes how Naksu’s past can be spoken about without pretending her hands are clean.
So-i’s belongings lead Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) and Master Heo to a soul potion tied to Shaman Choi and the Queen’s captivity. The servant who knew So-i calls it the bell potion: drink it, hear bells, then go mad. So-i had once felt guilt over a girl from Sari Village who might have found her parents sooner if So-i had not stolen what belonged to her. That girl went mad and died.
Yul understands what this may mean. Naksu may have been controlled by Jin Mu when she ran wild at Songrim three years ago.
He wants to tell the truth because Jang Uk has been paying for everything Naksu did. Park Jin (Yoo Jun-sang) gives the colder answer: Uk’s pain is not only guilt. The ice stone puts him in the position Jin Mu and the Queen crave. He has power that can dry out the world or stop that from happening.
That burden arrives in the secret room.
Jin Mu gathers seventy-eight soul shifters and promises them a world where the strong become stronger forever. Youth will stay young. Power will keep its seat. Beauty will remain desirable. The cost belongs to the bodies stolen from other people. Go Won asks what happens to them, and Jin Mu tells him not to cling to insignificant things.
Go Won finally refuses that lie. Trying to protect those so-called insignificant things is strength, he says.
Then Jang Uk closes the room.
He builds a barrier while fighting all seventy-eight soul shifters, and he saves his coldest words for Jin Mu. The Gwanju is the only non-soul-shifter in his own organization, perhaps because he feared running wild. Uk has not come for revenge. He left the world he has always longed for because Jin Mu is wrong and must be stopped.
We know what world he means. He left Gwido. He left the door that could have kept him with Bu-yeon. He chose the sword again because she would not let him pretend there was no right answer.
Bu-yeon makes her choice in Gwido at the same time. She sends Jin Mu there, shows him the empty ice stone, and lets him believe he can possess it. Then she places it inside him. His death will be slow. He will wither like the Choi family mage whose corpse he never respected.
When Jin Mu recognizes her as Naksu, the revenge finally belongs to the right person.
She does not celebrate. She says this death suits him, then admits she too will likely disappear in that prison. Jang Uk ends Jin Mu’s network, but Bu-yeon uses the same night to remove herself from Jang Uk’s future.
Bu-yeon gives Jang Uk a reason to chase her
After the battle, Daeho’s leaders turn survival into jurisdiction.
Jin Mu is gone, the soul shifters have turned to stone, and the fire bird’s release has been stopped for now. Instead of gratitude, the Unanimous Assembly looks at Jang Uk’s ice stone and sees a problem to claim. If the soul-shifter threat is finished, why should he keep the power they permitted him to carry for that duty?
Bu-yeon returns from Gwido with the Jinyowon Plaque and proves her divine power before them. If she can place an ice stone inside Jin Mu, she might be able to remove the one in Jang Uk. The Assembly immediately tries to make her the hand that will kill him.
She agrees to abide by their decision.
Then she gives Jang Uk a different order without saying his name. There is still one soul shifter left, one he knowingly spared. He must confirm it and watch it wither and die.
Everyone in the room hears duty. Jang Uk hears Naksu.
That is why the confrontation outside lands so hard. He understands that she used his role as executioner to call him to her. He calls her his merciless master. She answers that she cannot be his master when she has already let him go. She is still the person who taught him how to move, fight, endure, and choose, and she is trying to free him from killing the woman he loves when her borrowed life runs out.
Yul’s later confession sharpens the pain. Naksu will disappear soon. Maybe the bell potion can lessen some blame, but she refuses to use it as an excuse. She was an assassin raised in Danhyanggok, driven by vengeance, and she will not pretend control erases every choice.
Uk’s response is not romantic fantasy. He remembers leaving her in Gwido while pretending not to know her. If he admitted who she was, he would have to kill her. Her coming disappearance cannot become an excuse for them to stay together. Better, he says, that they each be tormented.
The cliffhanger refuses to leave Jin Mu dead long enough for anyone to breathe. The Queen enters Gwido to demand the Soul Ejector and learns that Jin Mu hid it in the blood of the Choi family mage when he shifted her soul. Then he takes another body, escapes, and returns wearing Yun-o’s face. He still wants the fire bird. He still wants the ice stone. The finale now has to answer both the cosmic threat and the question Bu-yeon and Jang Uk have been avoiding: who gets to live when love, duty, and borrowed bodies all demand payment?
What works
- Gwido is used well as both prison and confession room. Bu-yeon’s returned memory, Go Won’s guilt, the empty ice stone, and Jin Mu’s punishment all belong there.
- Go Won’s turtle turn should be absurd, and it is, but the Black Tortoise reveal gives the joke real consequence.
- Jang Uk’s battle against the seventy-eight soul shifters has weight because the dialogue keeps returning to stolen bodies and immortality at someone else’s expense.
- Bu-yeon/Naksu (Go Yoon-jung) gets agency in the reveal. She summons Jang Uk, sends Jin Mu to Gwido, chooses her own disappearance, and forces the Assembly’s language back toward the truth.
- The bell potion thread helps without absolving too much. It gives Naksu’s Songrim tragedy a new layer, then lets her reject the easy comfort of being declared innocent.
What stumbles
- The Unanimous Assembly turns on Jang Uk so quickly that the political reaction feels compressed. The logic tracks, but the scene has to move from gratitude to fear to proposed execution in a very small space.
- Jin Mu’s body-swap survival works as a final cliffhanger, though it slightly blunts the satisfaction of Bu-yeon’s Gwido punishment. His escape is useful for the finale, but his slow death had already felt earned.
- A few mythology pieces arrive very close together: Jin Seol-ran’s possible lingering will, Bu-yeon’s divine power, the empty ice stone, the Soul Ejector in Choi blood, and the Black Tortoise. They connect, but the density asks a lot from one penultimate chapter.
What this sets up for Part 2 Episode 10
Episode 10 has to finish the fire bird crisis, Jin Mu’s last theft, and the Assembly’s attempt to control Jang Uk’s ice stone. It also has to resolve Bu-yeon’s disappearing soul without cheapening the season’s central ache: Jang Uk knows the woman in front of him, and she now knows herself, but recognition has never meant permission to stay.
