Bu-yeon leaves Jinyowon as Jang Uk’s bride, then follows the dead woman’s traces straight to his heart.
Episode 03 begins with a lie bold enough to become public truth. Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) walks into the Unanimous Assembly, claims Jin Bu-yeon (Go Yoon-jung) as his wife, and dares every mage in the room to stop him. Bu-yeon backs the lie because the alternative is a locked room, a mother who calls ownership love, and a life chosen for her before she can remember who she is.
That makes this a marriage episode without the comfort of romance.
Jang Uk wants Bu-yeon’s divine power to return so she can remove the ice stone from his chest. Bu-yeon wants the man who came for her to mean what he keeps refusing to say. Between those two wants, Episode 03 lets the marriage rumor become a test of who is protecting whom, and why protection keeps looking so much like abandonment.
Bu-yeon claims Jang Uk in front of the Assembly
Ho-gyeong tries to pull Bu-yeon back by speaking to her like a precious child who would never disobey. Bu-yeon answers softly first. Then she chooses the lie in front of everyone: she married Jang Uk, and she will live with him.
Jang Uk does not draw his sword. He does not need to. The room already knows what sits inside his chest. When one mage says Jang Uk could use the ice stone’s energy to take every soul gathered there, the threat becomes louder than any duel. Daeho’s most respectable men can posture, but no one wants to be the first body proving they are not afraid.
Go Won (Shin Seung-ho) answers the confrontation with a demand for proof. If Jang Uk and Bu-yeon are married, they need a witness. Bu-yeon finds one where no one expects it: the child she claims to be carrying.
It is ridiculous.
It also works.
Master Heo can only confirm a pregnancy after twenty-one days, and the whole Assembly suddenly has to discuss timelines nobody wants spoken aloud. Jang Uk looks furious because Bu-yeon has dragged him into a lie with a deadline. Bu-yeon looks relieved because, for once, the room has to treat her choice as real.
The comedy is sharp because the stakes are ugly. Ho-gyeong wanted to announce her heir while keeping control of the person inside that title. Bu-yeon uses the announcement as her escape.
And Jang Uk lets her walk out beside him.
A tracking thread pulls Bu-yeon back toward Jinyowon
At Jang Uk’s house, Bu-yeon tests the Jinyowon lamp again and makes it glow. She has no clean memory attached to the power, only flashes, but the result is enough for Jang Uk. If her memories return with her divine power, then bringing her out of Jinyowon was the right decision for his own purpose.
Bu-yeon hears the coldness in that.
She asks whether he put the light out at the Assembly because he wanted to take her with him. He refuses to give her that comfort. Even if he helped, he says it was not for the reason she hoped.
Then the tracking thread tightens.
Ho-gyeong has sewn control into her daughter’s body. The thread hurts when Ho-gyeong calls, and the pain is not symbolic. Bu-yeon doubles over in bed while Maid Kim watches helplessly. She refuses to go back. “If I’m unable to endure this pain,” she says, “then I do not deserve to take what I truly desire.”
That line matters because Bu-yeon is still missing most of herself, but she already knows the difference between being rescued and being free. She does not want Jang Uk to return her like stolen property. She wants to survive the claim her mother put under her skin.
Jang Uk hears that she is in pain and does not rush to her room. He waits until the thread leads back to Jinyowon, then destroys the spool from the other end. When Ho-gyeong asks what he has done, he answers like a husband only when the word can hurt her: his wife cannot sleep, so Ho-gyeong should stop calling her in the middle of the night.
Bu-yeon does not see that part.
She only feels the pain stop.
That gap is where the romance lives right now. Jang Uk protects her, then hides the care so completely that she mistakes it for indifference. Bu-yeon wants proof that he chose her. He keeps giving proof only when she is not there to receive it.
Seo Yul follows Bu-yeon through Gaema Village
Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) has already noticed the impossible face. Bu-yeon looks like Naksu, but the body and aura do not match what he remembers. He goes looking for So-i because So-i still moves through the dirty places where Cheonbugwan keeps its secrets.
So-i is trapped too. A blood parasite keeps her dependent on medicine from the Gwanju, and the order is simple: bring Jin Bu-yeon to Cheonbugwan. Jin Mu’s side wants to read Bu-yeon’s mind and confirm whether she really is the Jinyowon heir.
The trap in Gaema Village almost works. Bu-yeon follows the stolen jade because she can see its energy. She senses the bad air in the room and jumps into water to avoid the soporific. When Seo Yul finds her soaked and embarrassed, the scene shifts from danger into one of the episode’s gentler detours.
Yul tries to escort her out. Then he gets lost.
Bu-yeon is delighted to discover that Daeho’s famous genius can lose his way if he gets flustered. She calls herself beautiful but not bright, then decides she would have liked him better if they could be two foolish friends. Yul, because he is Yul, offers to be a fool with her.
It is light, but it is not filler. Bu-yeon asks him about the soul shifter whose blue mark Jang Uk once saw in her eyes. Yul tells her the name: Naksu. He also tells her that Naksu killed Jang Uk.
Bu-yeon hears the name without remembering that it belongs to her.
That is the cruelest part of the scene. Yul is walking beside the woman he lost in one form and recognizes in another only by fragments. Bu-yeon is learning about herself as if she were hearing court gossip. Jang Uk’s old wound becomes information she has to handle carefully around him.
She decides not to mention Naksu.
Of course the name keeps finding her anyway.
Naksu’s grave collapses and the blue jade answers
Dang-gu tells Bu-yeon about Jang Uk’s Dark Forest. Deep inside it, he has stacked stone towers for the soul shifters he killed. One tower belongs to Naksu, or at least to the death Jang Uk has been trying to accept without ever seeing it.
Bu-yeon finds the tower. The blue jade is inside.
The memory that comes with it is intimate: bird’s eggs, red and blue, one for each of them. Bu-yeon does not understand the scene, but she knows the stone is not ordinary. When the tower falls without her touching it, she takes the jade with the practical innocence of someone who has found an object from her own life and has no idea why it hurts everyone else.
Park Jin (Yoo Jun-sang) tries to make Jang Uk face the death he avoided. He asks why Jang Uk built the stone tower in the forest instead of visiting the cliff where Mu-deok fell. Was it mourning, or was it hope that she might return? Sang-ho saw her petrified before she fell into Lake Gyeongcheondaeho. Jang Uk needs to hear that and grieve, Park Jin says, before he decides whether he still wants to die.
That conversation lands hard because Jang Uk has been treating death like an appointment he can arrange once everyone else is settled. He tells Maid Kim to marry Park Jin and move on. He keeps the red jade because he wants certainty that Naksu is dead. He hunts soul shifters, stacks stones, and waits for a call from a woman who has never used the jade to summon him.
Then Bu-yeon uses it.
She does not know the full meaning when Cho-yeon’s maid tells her to call him. She only knows everyone doubts she is his bride, and this pair of stones might explain why. Jang Uk feels the call and runs to the forest because for one impossible second, it could be Naksu.
Bu-yeon understands that as soon as he arrives.
“I was the one who called you,” she says. “But I guess I’m not the one you came here to find.”
That line is the episode’s ache in plain form. She is the one who called. She is also not the woman he believes he is answering. Jang Uk is standing in front of Naksu’s soul and cannot accept it yet. Bu-yeon is holding proof of a love she remembers only in flashes.
So she offers him one thing he wants to hear: she regained another memory.
For a very long time, she says, they have liked each other.
She says it like discovery. He hears it like a haunting.
What works
The tracking thread gives Ho-gyeong’s control a physical cruelty. Bu-yeon’s pain is not abstract family pressure. Her mother can pull on her body from another room, and Jang Uk has to break the tool before Bu-yeon even knows he came.
The marriage lie keeps balancing comedy and danger. The fake pregnancy witness is funny because everyone is forced into social panic, but it also lets Bu-yeon claim public personhood in the only language the Assembly cannot easily dismiss.
Yul and Bu-yeon’s Gaema Village walk is a smart use of softness. Their foolish-friends exchange is charming, then the Naksu question slips in and reminds us that every gentle conversation can uncover another blade.
The jade ending is clean, painful, and specific. The paired stones still call to each other. Jang Uk still answers. Bu-yeon is both the caller and the stranger.
Go Won’s turtle subplot should be sillier than it is, but it gives him a small moral test away from palace performance. He buys the turtle because Bu-yeon sees the warm heart he keeps trying to hide.
What stumbles
The Cheonbugwan and Queen material crowds the middle stretch. The cursed powder, dried wells, court-lady abuse, Jin Mu’s plan, So-i’s blood parasite, and the Queen’s rotting body all matter, but several threads arrive in quick succession before the hour returns to Jang Uk and Bu-yeon.
Cho-yeon’s maid pushing Bu-yeon toward the jade call is useful plot pressure, though the scene leans a little obvious. Bu-yeon already has enough emotional reason to seek Jang Uk without needing another person to spell out why the jade will hurt.
Jang Uk’s avoidance is emotionally consistent, but the repeated near-misses make the house scenes feel slightly stretched. Bu-yeon waiting, missing him, deciding not to go, then deciding to go works better once the jade enters the scene.
What this sets up for Part 2 Episode 04
The next episode has to deal with a dangerous public lie and a private truth neither lead can say plainly. Bu-yeon has now called Jang Uk through Naksu’s jade and remembered that they liked each other long before this marriage. Jang Uk has felt the call he thought would never come, but he still does not know how to look at Bu-yeon without seeing both hope and punishment.
Jin Mu’s side is moving faster now. If he can use Naksu’s name to separate Bu-yeon from Jang Uk, the marriage claim becomes a weapon against both of them. So-i knows Bu-yeon looks like Naksu. Seo Yul knows enough to be afraid of what he does not know. Ho-gyeong knows Jang Uk can break her control.
And the ice stone remains inside Jang Uk’s chest, waiting for Bu-yeon’s memories to return before it kills him.
