A rescue at Jinyowon gives Seo Yul the truth, while Jang Uk is pushed toward a world he refuses to protect.
Part 2, Episode 06 begins with a memory that does not belong neatly to the woman saying it. Jin Bu-yeon remembers standing alone at the top of a tall tree, helpless, waiting for someone to come. Jang Uk hears Danhyanggok in it, and one word changes the air between them. He wants to see the woman in front of him, but every familiar detail drags Naksu back into the room.
That is the ache of this chapter. Bu-yeon does not know why the memories keep arriving. Jang Uk knows too much to be calm. Seo Yul is about to learn enough to break him.
Bu-yeon names the tall tree before Seo Yul arrives
Bu-yeon tells Jang Uk about the tree as if she is describing a private fantasy. She was alone, frightened, and waiting. Then he came. For her, the image is one more strange piece from the locked room inside her mind.
For Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook), it is almost impossible to hear without thinking of Mu-deok. The tall tree in Danhyanggok was not a dream. It was a place Naksu knew, and a promise that belonged to another life.
So he asks the question that keeps haunting this season without ever becoming simple: why does she keep confusing him?
Bu-yeon’s answer is wounded but fair. He holds her hand. He listens to her stories. Then he looks through her toward someone else. If he misses that woman enough to go crazy, she can help by doing everything that woman once did.
Jang Uk stops her with the truth. A tree like that exists. A very big, tall tree. One he and that woman had promised to climb together.
Then Bu-yeon says Danhyanggok.
She does not know how she knows the name, and that is the terror of it. Her mind is handing her locations, sensations, and old promises. She insists the hand is hers, the comfort is hers, the woman in this room is hers.
The interruption comes from a familiar energy beyond the trees. Bu-yeon senses someone nearby. It is Seo Yul.
Yul is not there for romance. He is there because So-i is dying, and the blood parasite inside his body has turned her secret into his emergency.
Seo Yul rescues So-i and hears Naksu’s name
Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) finds So-i inside Jinyowon because she has been dragged into the same cruel machinery she once tried to use. Jin Ho-gyeong knows there may be a way to remove the parasite. So-i knows enough to be dangerous. The king arrives, and Yul, Uk, and Bu-yeon have to move.
Jang Uk gets Ho-gyeong to let him enter Jinyowon by asking to see the fire bird. The egg is still there, small and unhatched, but the warning around it is enormous. If it hatches and flies, the world dries out. If someone takes it, Jinyowon crumbles.
Uk’s conversation with Ho-gyeong cuts through her idea of protection. He saw the room where Bu-yeon was kept. He saw the thread sewn into her back. Ho-gyeong calls it duty. Uk calls it what it looked like: needles in a dark room.
So-i gives Yul the name he has been circling without knowing it. Mu-deok’s dead body was pulled from Lake Gyeongcheondaeho and saved. The soul still inside was Naksu. The current Jin Bu-yeon is Ho-gyeong’s daughter, but her face is Naksu’s.
Yul finally understands why Bu-yeon looked familiar.
He never imagined he would see Naksu again.
When he sees Bu-yeon afterward, he can barely hold himself together. She notices that he is about to cry. He says he is confused and afraid he has lost his way, then asks to stay like that for a moment. The hug is grief finding a living body and not knowing what to do.
Bu-yeon wants to tell Jang Uk that Yul is ill. Yul stops her. He does not want Uk to find out. So-i also tells him they must keep Bu-yeon’s secret because Ho-gyeong may be the only person who can save his life.
Yul accepts the burden too quickly. That is his fatal habit.
Jang Uk is asked to protect a world he abandoned
Park Jin (Yoo Jun-sang) learns that strange red objects are turning up in dried wells and canals around Daeho. They carry the energy of a volcano. Someone is sending them in by boat and using them to dry up water, making the drought worse and pushing the court toward the lake rite.
Jin Mu is behind the movement, and the plan is not subtle once the pieces line up. Create drought. Stir fear. Point to the old story of the ice stone falling from the sky when the world suffered from drought. Then push toward the fire bird.
Master Lee tells Jang Uk the truth plainly. The royal family and Cheonbugwan are involved. If Uk fights them, it will be treated as treason. If he wins, he could find himself on the throne.
That is when the King’s Star returns. The star believed to belong to the Crown Prince rightfully belongs to Jang Uk. Uk already knows who his father was: the late king, whose soul used Jang Gang’s body through the alchemy of souls. He was born from a crime everyone else buried.
Uk’s answer is not ambition. It is exhaustion.
He has already decided that existing was his first crime. After Naksu killed him and the ice stone brought him back, power felt like punishment in his chest. The one person he wanted to protect died, and now the world wants him to protect everyone else.
Master Lee repeats the lesson Mu-deok used to force into him: if he will not do anything, he might as well die.
That line follows him all episode.
It reaches him again through Crown Prince Go Won (Shin Seung-ho). Go Won comes to reward him, carrying the king’s offer to make Uk general of North Fortress and send him far from Daeho. It is exile.
Their argument begins with politics and somehow passes through a turtle.
Go Won thought Uk cared for his turtle as a gesture of favor. Uk says he thought it belonged to Eunuch Oh. Go Won is embarrassed, but the turtle gave him enough hope to talk to a man who hates and distrusts him.
Uk says he has nothing left to protect.
Go Won answers with the cruelest useful thing he can say: inside the barrier, Uk once shone even after losing all his energy. Now, with great power, he is dead. If he will do nothing, then he is already dead.
It lands because Go Won is not wrong. He is vain and prickly, but he is not blind. Uk’s grief has become a locked door, and the fire bird may burn the world while Uk sits behind it.
Bu-yeon looks for a room that belongs to her
She keeps recovering memories that feel too physical to dismiss. On the boat with Park Jin and Jin Cho-yeon, she suddenly remembers dangling from that same place before, weak and desperate, her arms hurting. She says it is her memory, not someone else’s.
Her power is also returning. She can sense the red objects in the water. She can feel dangerous energy around people. Park Jin gives her a Songrim Spirit Plaque, and Jang Uk recognizes the old rhythm immediately. His master once pushed him until he reached Chisu faster than anyone after his gate of energy opened.
When he says his old master never let him quit, Bu-yeon repeats the line that has been chasing him: if he is not going to do anything, he might as well die.
Neither of them knows who is speaking through her in that moment. That is why it hurts.
Bu-yeon then makes her softest promise. She plans to find her own room. She will discover who she is and decorate that room well, so Jang Uk no longer has to be confused. She will make it warm and comfortable for him.
It is a tender line with a knife under it. Jin Ho-gyeong later explains the cost to herself: once Bu-yeon’s powers return, her memories will return to Naksu, and Naksu will be driven from the body.
So Bu-yeon’s search for herself may also be the path that removes the soul Jang Uk loves.
That tension is why the jealousy scenes work. Bu-yeon says she will go to Danhyanggok with Yul because Yul is her friend. Uk insists Yul is his friend. She argues that if Yul is his friend, and she is Uk’s wife, then surely they can be friends too.
Then she lands the line Uk cannot answer: how can they be friends if she holds him at night?
Uk knows he has lost control of himself. He says as much after she leaves. The romance is confused because every person in it is telling a different truth.
Bu-yeon wants to be seen as herself.
Uk sees Naksu and Bu-yeon at once.
Yul now knows exactly who she is, and his answer is to take her to Danhyanggok before he dies.
So-i tries to leave after begging Yul to live. Her confession to the woman helping her is simple: the world she knew was filthy and dark, but after meeting Yul, everything looked cleaner and brighter. It is not an attempt to make her innocent. So-i has done too much harm for that. But it gives her last choice a human shape.
Jin Mu’s men catch her because the parasite no longer controls her body. They beat her to find out where it went. She lies, saying she took the medicine herself because she thought it would help her.
Yul hears she has been taken and goes to the gambling den. Bu-yeon finally tells Jang Uk about the strange energy she saw inside Yul.
At the den, Yul fights while knowing he cannot use too much energy. The parasite punishes him from inside. So-i dies in his arms after saying she is glad the world she saw before death was clean and bright.
Then the room turns on Yul.
Uk arrives too late to prevent the wound but in time to see his friend collapsing. Yul apologizes. Uk looks at the men around them and makes his coldest promise: not a single person there will leave alive.
That is where Episode 06 cuts hardest. All hour, people have been trying to wake Uk up by telling him that doing nothing is death. Now he is awake, but the thing waking him is rage.
What works
The Yul reveal is the strongest material here. His recognition of Naksu is quiet, delayed, and devastating. His final walk into danger feels like a choice made by someone already saying goodbye.
Bu-yeon’s memory thread is also handled with care. The tall tree, the boat railing, the room metaphor, and the Spirit Plaque let her identity return through objects and sensations. Go Yoon-jung’s Bu-yeon is not treated as a placeholder for another woman.
The Crown Prince material is sharper than expected. The turtle joke starts as court comedy and ends as a serious accusation: Uk has power but no will, while Go Won has fear but still wants someone to stop the fire bird plot.
What stumbles
There is too much political business at once. Red objects, volcanic energy, dried wells, boats, court pressure, North Fortress, King’s Star, and the lake rite all arrive in a crowded run of scenes.
So-i’s exit gives her one honest final choice, though it leans heavily on Yul’s purity to soften her last moments. Her regret is clear, but years of damage get covered in a few lines.
What this sets up for Part 2 Episode 07
Episode 07 has to deal with Uk’s rage before it becomes a war between Songrim and Cheonbugwan. If Seo Yul survives, Jin Ho-gyeong’s cure becomes urgent, and Bu-yeon’s secret becomes harder to keep.
Danhyanggok also waits. Bu-yeon wants the tree because she thinks it may tell her who she is. Yul wants to take her there because he already knows.
