A false Naksu panic gives Jin Mu a weapon, while Bu-yeon starts touching memories that still belong to another life.
The fourth hour begins with a memory that should not be in Jin Bu-yeon’s hands. She holds the yin-yang jade and repeats the old bird’s-egg exchange, the private red-and-blue promise that once belonged to Jang Uk and Mu-deok. For Bu-yeon (Go Yoon-jung), it feels like proof that her divine powers are returning. For Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook), it feels like grief answering him in the wrong voice.
That is the cruel balance of Part 2 right now. Jang Uk is close enough to hear Naksu again, but the woman in front of him does not know why those words hurt. Bu-yeon wants to be chosen as herself, even while someone else’s love keeps surfacing through her hands.
Bu-yeon touches the jade and finds Mu-deok’s memory
Bu-yeon calls Jang Uk with the jade because she thinks she has recovered something precious. She remembers the old exchange almost word for word: “They’re bird’s eggs,” “I’ll pick the red,” “You take blue.” The lines are playful in memory, but they land like a wound in the present.
Jang Uk does not soften when he realizes what happened. He asks how she could know any of it, then presses harder once she guesses that the memory belongs to the jade’s owner. He wants answers from the dead, and for a second he looks at Bu-yeon as a door instead of a person.
She feels that immediately.
“Are you trying to put me in between you and that dead girl?” she asks, and the question has no easy answer. He did marry her for a use. First it was her divine power, the hope that she could remove the ice stone from his chest. Now it might be her ability to touch the memories Naksu left behind.
The scene hurts because Bu-yeon has been trying to make a home inside a marriage that began as a bargain. She escaped Jinyowon, gained space, and found people who feed her, dress her, and speak to her like she matters. But Jang Uk still has a stone tower in the forest, and he still has questions buried under it.
When the cairn collapses, Bu-yeon becomes furious in a way that is half jealousy and half humiliation. She calls the tower his real wife and herself the second one. Then hunger, pride, and loneliness send her wandering through the woods until glowing fireflies answer her fear.
She thinks she may have summoned them.
That tiny wonder matters. Bu-yeon does not yet have the whole of Naksu’s past, but her power is waking in flashes: a memory through jade, a path lit by insects, a sense that objects and living things keep speaking near her. She is not a blank vessel. She is someone trying to understand which parts of herself are hers, which parts were left behind, and which parts other people want to claim.
A fake Naksu rumor spreads through Daeho
While Bu-yeon wrestles with the dead woman inside her marriage, Daeho begins panicking over a Naksu who is not there. A man crawls out of Lake Gyeongcheondaeho screaming that Naksu has returned, killed everyone on a boat, and promised to shift souls again. The capital believes him fast.
Fear becomes business before anyone checks the facts. Charms against Naksu appear in the market. Young women worry that she will steal their bodies. People trade guesses about what she looks like, as if Naksu has become less a person than a shape anyone can project terror onto.
That is why the rumor is so useful to Jin Mu. The old wound around Naksu has never healed. Jang Uk spent three years killing soul shifters with the ice stone’s power, but everyone knows he once loved the woman blamed for the massacre at Lake Gyeongcheondaeho. If another soul shifter appears and the public calls her Naksu, then every hesitation from Jang Uk can be twisted into loyalty to the dead.
Jin Mu says the quiet part plainly at court. Jang Uk and Naksu were once married, and people might think he refuses to kill her spirit because he still cares for her. King Go Won (Shin Seung-ho) hears the pressure. Jang Uk hears it too. He knows chasing a spirit that does not exist will only make the spirit feel real, but the command is given anyway.
The stronger political move comes after the meeting. Jin Mu tells the Queen that Naksu can be used to separate Jang Uk from Jinyowon. If Bu-yeon dies in public at the hands of a soul shifter, Daeho will call the attacker Naksu. Jang Uk will be blamed. Jinyowon will turn on him. The royal family can pull Jinyowon closer.
This is Part 2 at its darkest: grief becomes a rumor, rumor becomes policy, and policy becomes a knife pointed at a woman who does not even know why her face is dangerous.
Seo Yul notices what Bu-yeon can see
Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) spends this episode looking weaker than he will admit. Jang Uk notices the fatigue. Bu-yeon notices something worse. When Seo Yul walks her home from Chwiseonru, she sees strange energy inside his body and asks if he is very ill.
Yul asks her to pretend she saw nothing.
That request says a lot about where he is now. He can still protect Bu-yeon from his uncle’s cruelty at the inn, stepping in before she is paraded in front of rude men as the “dumb” bride who got away. He can still be gentle, still walk beside her, still remember an old conversation about snacks that echoes his past with Naksu. But his body is keeping a secret that divine eyes can read.
Bu-yeon’s gift keeps making people uncomfortable because it cuts through the stories they tell to survive. Jang Uk wants her to see more of Naksu, then resents the pain that comes with it. Seo Yul wants her to ignore what is killing him. Jin Ho-gyeong wants a daughter she can lock safely inside Jinyowon. Every person around Bu-yeon needs her power and fears what it might reveal.
The Chwiseonru material gives her a softer counterpoint. Ju-wol tells Bu-yeon too much about Jang Uk and Mu-deok: where they met, where he proposed, how he once carried her home, how honey biscuits were tied to him. Bu-yeon hates hearing it, then takes the biscuits anyway because Jang Uk likes them.
She is jealous, but she is also learning the map of a love she has somehow inherited.
That is the asymmetry Part 2 keeps pressing on. Jang Uk knows exactly whose memories are flickering through her. Bu-yeon only knows that the dead girl keeps appearing in places where she wants to stand. Her pain is not smaller because she lacks the full story. If anything, it is lonelier.
The Queen’s banquet becomes Jang Uk’s trap too
The banquet trap is elegant because it uses everyone else’s assumptions against them. The Queen invites the young ladies of Daeho out on the anniversary of Naksu’s death. Bu-yeon attends as Jang Uk’s bride, wearing the Jang family crest and taking the public place he told her to claim.
Before the danger arrives, the romance gets one of its gentlest movements. Jang Uk comes home while Bu-yeon is trying on dresses, notices her injured hand, and tells her to have Maidservant Kim trim her nails because they are precious. He says he means the nails. Neither of them believes that fully.
Then he tells her to sit where everyone can see her.
Bu-yeon asks if she can tell people they get along, if she can brag that he called lights for her in the dark. He says yes. She sees the fireflies again and smiles because that small light has become proof that someone came when she needed him.
Jang Uk is already planning around Jin Mu’s plan. He asks Maidservant Kim for Gwiseo, the Jinyowon white mouse that can take a person’s appearance after eating their fingernails. The earlier nail comment becomes a quiet setup for survival, not flirtation alone. At the banquet, a soul shifter stabs what looks like Bu-yeon, and the crowd accepts the answer it was trained to expect: Naksu killed Jang Uk’s bride.
Then Bu-yeon walks back in alive.
Jang Uk has turned the public stage back on Jin Mu. The dead body is a relic decoy. The attacker is real. The fear in the crowd is real. And now Jang Uk can kill the soul shifter in front of everyone and say the thing Daeho needs to hear: Naksu is gone from this world.
It is not the whole truth. The soul he mourns is much closer than anyone in that garden understands. But it gives Naksu’s name a kind of public burial. For three years, Jang Uk could not visit the cliff where she died. He could not cry because it felt like abandoning her there. Now he uses a lie to make the city stop calling her back as a monster.
The final cliff scene is the release he has been avoiding. Memories come in pieces: Mu-deok saying he was the first person who tried to save her, their master-and-pupil oath, the bird’s nest, the confession, “Jang Uk, I like you a lot.” He finally says what he could not say at the water’s edge before. He could not cry because leaving tears there felt like leaving her behind.
Bu-yeon finds him in that grief, but she still does not know that his mourning and her missing self are touching the same soul.
What works
- The jade memory opens the episode with the exact kind of pain Part 2 does best: Bu-yeon reaches for proof of herself and finds proof of another woman’s love.
- Jin Mu’s Naksu rumor is cruel in a believable way. He does not need a real ghost when public fear will do most of the work for him.
- The banquet sequence pays off several small details: Bu-yeon’s nails, Gwiseo, the Jang crest, the fireworks, and Jang Uk’s need to end the rumor in front of witnesses.
- Go Yoon-jung keeps Bu-yeon’s jealousy sharp without making her petty. She is hurt because she understands enough to know she is being compared, not enough to know why the comparison keeps following her.
- The friend material around Jang Uk, Seo Yul, and Park Dang-gu gives the episode air before the political trap tightens. Their breakfast scene is silly, then the rice cake lesson comes back with real consequence.
What stumbles
- The fake Naksu rumor moves very quickly from lake panic to palace command. The speed fits Jin Mu’s manipulation, but the citywide fear could have used one more grounded scene outside the charm sellers.
- The Queen’s role is clear as a political accomplice, yet her personal appetite for the banquet still feels thinner than Jin Mu’s plan. She functions more as a venue for the trap than as a pressure of her own.
- The turtle comedy with Go Won is charming, but it sits a little apart from the main hour until Bu-yeon’s conversation with him gives it emotional shape.
What this sets up for Part 2 Episode 05
Episode 05 has three wounds to follow. First, Jang Uk has publicly killed “Naksu,” but privately he has only begun to mourn her properly. Second, Bu-yeon’s memories are arriving through objects, places, and people who do not know what they are waking in her. Third, Seo Yul’s illness is no longer easy to hide, especially now that Bu-yeon has seen the strange energy inside him.
Master Lee’s return makes the next step sharper. He saved Bu-yeon, woke her, and knows more about the body and soul than almost anyone left in Daeho. If he starts speaking plainly, Jang Uk’s marriage of use, Bu-yeon’s missing past, and Jin Ho-gyeong’s locked-door version of motherhood can no longer stay separate.
